NBA suspends Jose Alvarado and Mark Williams after on-court fight in Pelicans vs Suns Clash

The NBA has issued suspensions to New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado and Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams following their involvement in a physical altercation during Saturday night’s game in New Orleans.

Alvarado received a two-game suspension, while Williams was handed a one-game ban. Both suspensions are without pay, the league confirmed on Sunday.

Suspensions and Games Missed

Alvarado will miss the Pelicans’ home matchup against the New York Knicks on Monday, as well as their road game against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.

Williams, meanwhile, will sit out the Suns’ Monday night contest against the Washington Wizards.

The incident occurred during the third quarter of Phoenix’s 123–114 win, which completed a two-game road sweep for the Suns in the back-to-back series against New Orleans.

How the altercation unfolded

The confrontation began after Alvarado attempted to fight through a ball screen set by the 7-foot-1 Williams while defending Suns shooter Collin Gillespie, who had opened the game by knocking down his first five three-point attempts.

As Alvarado tried to stay attached to Gillespie, he shoved Williams aside and was whistled for a foul. Moments later, Williams retaliated by shoving the 6-foot guard from behind.

Alvarado immediately turned to confront Williams, leading to a heated exchange of words. The situation quickly escalated as both players grabbed each other and threw punches, with each landing a right hook before teammates and officials stepped in.

Both players were ejected from the game, and neither addressed the incident publicly afterward.

Coaches react as emotions boil over

Suns head coach Jordan Ott attributed the altercation to a mix of competitiveness and fatigue, pointing to the challenges of playing on consecutive nights.

“I saw it start, and then all of a sudden everyone jumped in,” Ott said. “Obviously, it happens. The second night of a back-to-back, the lack of sleep, something always tends to happen. “They let us play tonight, which is something we enjoy. They got tangled up, and obviously they both got thrown out.”

NBA takes swift action

The league’s swift disciplinary response underscores its continued zero-tolerance stance on fighting, particularly as teams navigate congested schedules and rising physical intensity.

For the Pelicans, Alvarado’s absence leaves a notable gap in perimeter defense and energy, while the Suns will briefly be without a key interior presence in Williams as they continue their push in the Western Conference standings.
