Ndamukong Suh retires from the NFL after 13 iconic seasons

Ndamukong Suh, one of the most dominant and feared defensive tackles of his generation, has officially retired from the NFL after a 13-year career that spanned five franchises, three Super Bowl appearances, and one Lombardi Trophy. The 37-year-old made the announcement via a heartfelt social media post on Saturday, one year after the passing of his father.

Before he passed, he gave me one final piece of advice: ‘It’s time to let football go. You’ve done everything you set out to do. Now it’s time for the next chapter,’” Suh shared. “That conversation stayed with me. So today, one year later, I’m honoring that wish. I’m officially retiring from the NFL.

A Fearsome Force from Day One

Ndamukong Suh burst onto the NFL scene after an extraordinary college career at Nebraska, where he was named the AP College Football Player of the Year in 2009. As a rookie with the Detroit Lions, he tallied 10 sacks and instantly earned First-Team All-Pro honors, a rare feat for a rookie defensive lineman.

He quickly became known for his relentless pressure, elite strength, and explosive tackling, redefining what it meant to play the interior line. While his career wasn’t without controversy, including fines for aggressive play, his impact was undeniable.

Super Bowl stints and a Lombardi Trophy

Suh’s career took him across the NFL landscape. After Detroit, he joined the Miami Dolphins, then the Los Angeles Rams, and eventually landed with Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won Super Bowl LV in 2020. He later joined the Philadelphia Eagles for a Super Bowl run in 2022.

He’s one of the rare defensive players to have played in three Super Bowls with three different franchises, showcasing his veteran leadership and championship pedigree.

Suh was known not just for his physicality but for his football IQ. He was rarely injured, missing only two games due to injury across 13 seasons — a remarkable feat for someone at the heart of the trenches.

Suh was more than just brute force. He was cerebral, consistent, and intimidating — a true game-changer,” said an NFL Network analyst.

His impact stretched beyond the field. Suh was actively involved in philanthropy, investing in real estate and businesses, and promoting financial literacy among young athletes.

Suh’s Hall of Fame Case

With 5 Pro Bowl selections, 5 All-Pro honors, and a Super Bowl ring, Ndamukong Suh will almost certainly be considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His sack numbers and longevity make him one of the most complete defensive tackles of the modern era.

He ends his career ranked among the top 10 in sacks by defensive tackles since the stat became official.
