Nelly Korda aiming for eighth victory of the season at the LPGA Tour Championship

Nelly Korda, currently ranked at the top and aged 26, is poised to be the frontrunner as she aims for her eighth LPGA title of the season when the Tour Championship commences on Thursday.

The American golfer has already secured her position as the LPGA Player of the Year and has the opportunity to surpass the record for the most winnings in a single LPGA season during the $11 million (£8.7m) tournament at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida.

"It has been a crazy year," Korda remarked. "I am thankful for all of it. I appreciate the highs, the lows, and the chance to engage in what I love while hopefully inspiring the next generation."

The season finale in Southwest Florida has seen the qualification of the top 60 LPGA players based on the season points standings.

Entering this season, Korda had accumulated eight career wins on the LPGA tour, and she quickly increased that tally by triumphing at the Drive On Championship in her hometown of Bradenton, Florida, in January.

She followed this with victories at the Pak Se-ri and Ford championships in March, as well as the LPGA Match Play and Chevron Championship, which marked her second major win, in April.

In May, Korda won the Americas Open and recently claimed the Annika title, bringing her total prize money for the season to $4,164,430. A top five finish this week would enable her to set a new LPGA record for single-season earnings.

Lorena Ochoa was the last player to achieve eight LPGA titles in a single season, accomplishing this feat in 2007, and she established an LPGA prize money record of $4,364,994 that year.

This record will be surpassed by the winner of this week's $4 million (£3.1m) top prize, which has been doubled from the previous year. Korda can also exceed Ochoa's mark with a top five finish, a feat she has achieved three times at Tiburon.

After being sidelined for nearly two months due to a neck injury, Korda made her return last week to win the Annika title. The time away allowed her to reflect on an extraordinary year.

"I've had an extended period at home, and I've definitely reminisced a little bit about the season, but I've also been motivated to finish the year strong," she stated.

It is quite challenging to achieve victory in this competitive environment against such exceptional players. The level of talent is remarkably high. It is gratifying to see that the dedication and effort I have invested alongside my team are yielding positive results.

Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand is poised to achieve the LPGA's lowest scoring average, currently standing at 69.54; however, she will not secure the Vare Trophy, which is typically awarded to the leader in this statistical category.

Ranked seventh, Jeeno, who claimed last year's Vare with an average of 69.53, will not complete the requisite 70 rounds to qualify for the accolade, as she enters the final event with only 62 rounds played, two more than Korda, who is second in scoring average at 69.66.

"I will maintain my focus on the fact that I have achieved a low scoring average for two consecutive years, regardless of whether I win the trophy," Jeeno remarked. "It is an impressive statistic and a significant achievement."

The leading candidates for the Vare Trophy this week include South Korea's Ryu Hae-ran, with an average of 69.98, and Japan's Ayaka Furue, at 70.05.

South Korea's Amy Yang is the reigning champion, having triumphed by three strokes last year.

In the race for the LPGA Rookie of the Year, Japan's Mao Saigo is in the lead, with South Korea's Im Jin-hee trailing by 66 points. Im must secure a top three finish while ensuring Saigo finishes outside the top 40 to surpass her for the award.
