Netflix Breaks Records: 60m Households watch Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

Netflix’s first foray into live sports streaming delivered knockout numbers, with 60 million households worldwide tuning in live for Friday night’s Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing event. The highly anticipated showdown, held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, peaked at 65 million concurrent streams, according to Netflix’s statement on Saturday.
The match saw YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, 27, secure a unanimous decision over the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson. Despite the loss, Tyson, who overcame significant health challenges to step into the ring, expressed gratitude:
"I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in the ring one last time. To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish 8 rounds...is an experience no man has the right to ask for."
Paul also shared his appreciation for Tyson and the historic event: "Thank you...to the legend Mike Tyson for giving me a chance to share the ring with him."
Women’s Boxing makes history
The co-main event was equally significant, with Katie Taylor retaining her undisputed women’s lightweight title against Amanda Serrano in a controversial unanimous decision. The fight drew 50 million households globally, a record-breaking number that Netflix says makes it likely the most-watched professional women’s sporting event in U.S. history.
Challenges and Triumphs in Streaming
While the event shattered records, it wasn’t without hiccups. 85,000 viewers reported issues with outages and buffering, prompting frustration on social media. Netflix acknowledged the challenges, humorously stating: "The boxing mega-event dominated social media, shattered records, and even had our buffering systems on the ropes."
Netflix’s Sports Strategy
This blockbuster card marked Netflix's entry into live sports streaming, with more to come. The platform will air two NFL games on Christmas Day and begin streaming WWE Raw starting Jan. 6, 2025.
Nielsen data shows the 2023 Super Bowl remains the most-watched U.S. broadcast in history, averaging 123.7 million viewers across TV and streaming. As Netflix continues its push into live sports, the success of Paul vs. Tyson suggests a promising future, proving the platform can rival traditional networks in delivering high-profile sporting events.
