Netherlands beat Turkey and secure semi-final spot at EURO 2024

Turkey, missing their last-16 match-winner Merih Demiral due to a two-match ban for an offensive gesture, entered their third European Championship quarter-final with a physical approach, defying expectations of a conservative gameplan as outsiders.

This approach paid off with a 35th-minute goal for Turkey, as Arda Guler set up Samet Akaydin to head home from a loose ball, giving Turkey their first half-time lead at the tournament and challenging Ronald Koeman to rally his team during the break.

The Dutch team came back after the break with a stronger determination, but it was their opponents who almost scored a second goal just before the hour mark when Guler took an ambitious long-range free-kick that hit the upright.

Turkey showed no hesitation in attempting shots from a distance, with Kenan Yildiz also making headlines briefly with a powerful 20-yard strike that forced Bart Verbruggen to make an awkward save.

Despite Turkey's efforts, Stefan de Vrij equalized in the 70th minute with a strong header from a well-executed short corner.

With the momentum on their side, the Netherlands only needed six minutes to take the lead, thanks to a Mert Muldur own goal.

In an attempt to beat Cody Gakpo to Denzel Dumfries' dangerous cross, the full-back accidentally redirected the ball into his own net.

As Turkey's hopes of advancing in the Euros dwindled, they launched an attack in the final minutes, putting pressure on the Dutch defense and forcing Verbruggen to make a remarkable save to deny Kerem Akturkoglu.

Koeman's team managed to secure the victory and set up an exciting match against England, bringing an end to Turkey's remarkable journey in the tournament.
