New boss Enzo Maresca exceeds expectations, leading a remarkable Chelsea revival

Confronted with conflicting ownership, an oversized squad, and significant pressure to elevate Chelsea from their current struggles, Enzo Maresca has surpassed expectations by bringing stability to the tumultuous environment at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca's commendable start will be rigorously tested on Sunday as his fourth-placed team faces Premier League leaders Liverpool.
At the onset of the season, few would have predicted Chelsea's involvement in any top-tier match when Maresca first joined the club at their Cobham training facility during the summer.
In contrast to Liverpool's new manager Arne Slot, who has reaped the benefits of a solid foundation established by his successful predecessor Jurgen Klopp, Maresca has had to navigate a more unstable situation in west London.
Appropriately, given its proximity to the Brompton cemetery, Stamford Bridge has become a resting place for managerial careers in recent years.
Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali dismissed Thomas Tuchel merely 100 days into their tenure, despite the fact that the German had led the team to a Champions League victory under former owner Roman Abramovich in 2021.
Graham Potter, who succeeded Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, was initially celebrated as one of the most promising young coaches in England. However, his tenure was cut short after less than seven months.
Mauricio Pochettino, who was widely respected, managed to stay for only one season before his departure in May, which opened the door for Enzo Maresca to take on the challenging task of revitalizing Chelsea during the summer.
Maresca joined from Leicester City, where he had successfully led the team to promotion to the Premier League the previous season. However, skeptics have raised concerns that he may soon fall victim to Chelsea's ongoing cycle of blame.
This marks only Maresca's second season as a manager, having previously been part of Pep Guardiola's coaching staff at Manchester City before taking the reins at Leicester in 2023.
Complicating matters for Maresca is a reported power struggle between Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. Following Boehly's brief role as the club's sporting director during the initial six months of the new ownership, Eghbali has emerged as the most active member of the ownership group.
Their relationship has reportedly soured in recent months, with disagreements over Pochettino's departure, the club's recruitment strategy, and the lack of progress on plans for a new stadium.
Despite these challenges, Maresca has begun to implement a cultural shift that may enable him to reverse Chelsea's downward trajectory.
The club has not claimed the Premier League title since 2017, and their drought of domestic trophies has now extended to six years, even with significant investments in new players.
Boehly and Eghbali have invested over £1 billion during their tumultuous tenure, employing a disorganized recruitment strategy that has significantly contributed to Chelsea's struggles.
Nevertheless, Maresca's experience under the intense and tactically proficient Guardiola has shaped his management style, providing him with a framework to rebuild Chelsea.
Entrusted with the responsibility of enhancing a team that finished sixth last season and 12th in the 2022-23 season, Maresca has successfully elicited commendable performances from a predominantly young squad.
Players such as Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, and Levi Colwill have thrived, while Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez have shown marked improvement compared to the previous year, all attributed to Maresca's skillful management.
"I am very pleased because the expectations I had regarding the players, their level, and style are clearly being met," he remarked.
"We have only been working together for two or three months. However, I am very pleased because this club is among the best in the world. I am eager to compete with them."
The Blues remain unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions, achieving four victories in seven league encounters under Maresca's guidance.
Chelsea's tally of 16 league goals this season is surpassed only by the reigning champions, Manchester City.
Improving upon Chelsea's poor record of just one win in their last 12 encounters with Liverpool in all competitions would represent another notable achievement for Maresca.
"We have very talented players, an excellent manager, and a prestigious club. We are looking forward to participating in this type of match," Maresca stated.
