New Orleans Saints part ways with Head Coach Dennis Allen

The New Orleans Saints terminated the contract of head coach Dennis Allen (52) on Monday following a significant defeat to the Carolina Panthers. In an official statement, the team announced that special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi would take over as interim head coach.
Rizzi joined the Saints in 2019 as the special teams coordinator and will now become the fourth head coach for the franchise since 2000. This appointment marks Rizzi's second experience as a head coach, having previously led the University of Rhode Island in 2008.
The Saints began the season with impressive victories in their first two games, winning by 37 and 25 points. However, a narrow 23-22 loss to their NFC South rivals, the Panthers, resulted in the team experiencing its first seven-game losing streak since 1999.
"Dennis has been a valued member of our organization for many years. He is well-respected throughout the NFL and has demonstrated unwavering loyalty and professionalism, as well as being an outstanding football coach for us. This makes today particularly difficult for me and our organization," stated Saints owner Gayle Benson.
"Nonetheless, I believe this decision was necessary at this juncture."
Allen is the second NFL coach to be dismissed this season, following the New York Jets' decision to part ways with Robert Saleh in October.
Having served as New Orleans' defensive coordinator under Sean Payton from 2015 to 2021, Allen was appointed head coach in 2022. Throughout his tenure, the Saints recorded an 18-25 record and did not qualify for the playoffs.
This season, several key players for the Saints have been sidelined due to injuries, including quarterback Derek Carr and wide receivers Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave.
Olave sustained his second concussion of the season during Sunday’s game after a severe hit to the head. He was taken to the hospital but was subsequently released.
This incident marks Olave's fourth concussion since joining the NFL, paralleling the situation of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has faced calls for retirement due to health concerns.
