New Zealand facing World Cup exit after Rutherford rescues Windies

Sherfane Rutherford played a crucial role in saving the West Indies with his batting performance, while their bowlers effectively contained New Zealand to secure a 13-run victory in a Group C match of the T20 World Cup in Trinidad on Wednesday.
Rutherford's unbeaten 68 runs off 39 balls, including two fours and six sixes, lifted the home side from a precarious position of 30 for five in the seventh over to a competitive total of 149 for nine after being asked to bat first.
After suffering a heavy defeat in their opening match against Afghanistan in Guyana, the Black Caps found themselves in a must-win situation. However, they struggled to build any momentum in their chase and could only manage 136 for nine.
Pacer Alzarri Joseph was the standout performer with figures of 4 for 19, while spinners Gudakesh Motie (3 for 25) and Akeal Hosein (1 for 21) also played their part in keeping the home side in control.
With this victory, the West Indies secured their third consecutive win and booked their place in the Super Eight phase of the competition. They still have one group match remaining against Afghanistan on Monday in St Lucia.
Although Glenn Phillips scored a valuable 40 runs off 33 balls for New Zealand, his dismissal in the 18th over to Joseph effectively sealed the match in favor of the West Indies.
Even though Mitchell Santner hit three sixes off Romario Shepherd in the final over, it was not enough to change the outcome of the contest.
Rutherford credited his success to simplicity and confidence in his skills, stating that it was crucial for his performance.
He highlighted the importance of being there till the end and making the most of the opportunities presented.
The lower order's contribution was also significant, with partnerships boosting the team's total.
New Zealand's improved performance, led by Boult and supported by Ferguson and Southee, showcased a sharper fielding display.
Despite the loss, Williamson praised Sherfane's innings and acknowledged the team's decision to aim for wickets.
West Indies' victory, salvaged by Rutherford's intervention, was a result of the team's resilience in a challenging situation, as noted by captain Powell.
