New Zealand lose Finau for Italy match, Barrett doubtful for clash

Samipeni Finau, aged 25, has been ruled out of the upcoming match against Italy in Turin on Saturday after failing a concussion test following a head injury sustained during the narrow defeat to France, as confirmed by All Blacks coach Scott Robertson.

Finau exited the match early in the thrilling contest, which ended 30-29, and was replaced by Peter Lakai, who marked his second test appearance with a try.

Additionally, centre Jordie Barrett also left the field due to a knee injury and is currently awaiting the results of a scan to determine his availability for the match against Italy.

Robertson announced that flanker Sam Cane would be fit to play after recovering from a head injury sustained late in the victory over Ireland, which resulted in a significant cut on his forehead requiring stitches.

"It will be the strongest team for Italy," Robertson stated in remarks reported by New Zealand media on Monday.

"This year has been remarkable for us, allowing us to field 12 debutants, providing them with playing time, fostering good combinations, and enhancing our cohesion.

"This week will follow suit."

France ended New Zealand's five-match winning streak, which included consecutive victories against Australia in the Rugby Championship and wins over Japan, England, and Ireland during a successful northern hemisphere tour.

All Blacks captain Scott Barrett expressed uncertainty regarding his decision when his team was awarded a penalty while trailing France 30-26 with six minutes remaining.

Barrett chose to have Damian McKenzie attempt a goal kick instead of opting for a line-out drive to pursue a try.

McKenzie successfully converted the penalty, but New Zealand was unable to score again.

Robertson indicated that a message was communicated from the coaches' box to Barrett during the match, although he did not reveal its content.

"He received the information," the coach remarked, ultimately expressing his support for the captain.

"It is essential to back him. He is your captain, and you must trust him. He acted on instinct at that moment. Now, with some time to reflect..."

The opportunities available in test football are rather restricted, and he believed he might have had another chance to secure an additional three points or a shot at victory, which ultimately did not materialize.
