Newcastle defeat Blackburn to book their spot in the FA Cup quarter-finals

Newcastle United secured their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals following a thrilling match against Blackburn Rovers, which ended in a 4-3 victory on penalties for the away team. This win adds to the Magpies' remarkable streak of nine consecutive victories in fifth-round ties.

Still in search of their inaugural victory under the leadership of new manager John Eustace, Blackburn recognized that a home cup match against a Premier League opponent presented the ideal opportunity to instill some much-needed confidence into their struggling campaign.

The initial stages of the game were cautious, with limited clear-cut chances. However, Blackburn's key player Sammie Szmodics threatened the opposing team's goal with a powerful strike that grazed the side-netting.

The hosts came close to scoring again just before the 30-minute mark, but Martin Dubravka reacted swiftly to deflect Tyrhys Dolan's low shot around the post.

Both teams continued to push for a breakthrough as halftime approached. Sean Longstaff's angled strike was only able to find the legs of Aynsley Pears, while Szmodics saw his powerful effort narrowly deflected over the crossbar.

Blackburn carried their momentum into the early stages of the second half, and once again, Dubravka made a crucial save to deny John Buckley's long-range shot.

Determined to make an impact in the game, Newcastle gradually improved as the second half progressed. However, Jamaal Lascelles' header, which seemed destined for the goal, was excellently blocked inside the six-yard box. Shortly after, Pears thwarted Anthony Gordon's chance with another impressive save.

Refusing to be discouraged, the visitors capitalized on their pressure with 19 minutes remaining. Substitute Miguel Almirón found Gordon inside the box, and the winger maintained his composure to execute a clinical first-time finish into the bottom corner.

Undeterred by this setback, the hosts swiftly responded just eight minutes later. Szmodics, the top scorer in the competition, hammered home a rebound from close range after Dilan Markanday's initial effort had struck the woodwork and been saved by Dubravka.

The contest's end-to-end nature remained relentless as it approached the closing stages, and Blackburn came agonizingly close to securing a late victory. Yasin Ayari's deflected strike from long range was met with a strong save from Dúbravka, preventing a potential winner.

As a result, the match entered extra time (ET), where Pears showcased his brilliance with a remarkable double save, denying Gordon and Longstaff. Dúbravka, on the other hand, stood firm and successfully thwarted Szmodics' attempts.

Despite both teams having a few half-chances, the outcome was ultimately determined by a penalty shootout. Dúbravka stepped up and delivered, saving shots from Szmodics and Dominic Hyam, securing Newcastle's third consecutive head-to-head (H2H) victory for the first time in over four decades.
