NFL Preview: Chiefs looking to secure AFC West, Eagles and Vikings chase Lions in playoff race

The Kansas City Chiefs, two-time reigning Super Bowl champions, are motivated by a season characterized by close victories as they aim to secure an NFL division title with a win on Sunday.

Currently holding an 11-1 record, the Chiefs have already guaranteed a playoff spot. However, they face pressure to continue their winning streak due to the Buffalo Bills, who stand at 10-2 and possess a tie-breaker advantage following their 30-21 victory over Kansas City last month.

A single misstep by the Chiefs could allow the Bills, who have also qualified for the postseason, to equal their record and gain a favorable position for home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

Consequently, the stakes are high this Sunday as the Chiefs host the Los Angeles Chargers, who have an 8-4 record, needing a win to secure the AFC West title, while the Bills will take on the Los Angeles Rams, currently at 6-6.

This season, the Chiefs have triumphed in nine games by margins of seven points or fewer, a situation that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes believes has fueled the team's desire for continuous improvement.

"The hope is that with all these close finishes, we're getting wins but it's keeping us hungry so that we can continue to try to get better as the season goes on," Mahomes stated.

He noted the team's progress, acknowledging that they have yet to reach their full potential.

"We've done better executing the offense, going to the right positions. I've done a better job of giving guys chances to make plays," he explained. "It's little plays here and there that have stalled out drives. There are plays in games where if we make that play the offense scores 30 points and we're not even having this discussion."

Mahomes expressed confidence that achieving a better record than last year, despite less impressive statistics, can still lead to a championship-caliber team.

Mahomes expressed confidence in the team's capabilities, stating, "I believe we possess the talent, a skilled coaching staff, and a strong work ethic that enables us to secure victories in any football game."

He emphasized the importance of consistent performance, noting, "It is crucial to maintain this level of effort on a daily and weekly basis. Our players are sufficiently motivated, but the path to success is never straightforward."

Mahomes further remarked, "To achieve a championship, one must perform at their highest level at the right moment. This is a lesson I have learned throughout my NFL career."

Eagles and Vikings Eye Playoffs
The Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, both holding a record of 10-2, have the opportunity to secure playoff spots with wins on Sunday, contingent upon some favorable outcomes.

The Vikings, who will face Atlanta (6-6) at home, require a victory along with either losses from Arizona and the Rams or a tie between Arizona and Seattle.

Meanwhile, the Eagles, hosting Carolina (3-9), have multiple scenarios for clinching a playoff berth if they emerge victorious, with the simplest scenario involving losses from the Rams, Arizona, and either Atlanta or Tampa Bay.

Other matchups on Sunday include the New York Jets visiting Miami, New Orleans taking on the New York Giants, Las Vegas facing Tampa Bay, Cleveland competing against Pittsburgh, Jacksonville squaring off with Tennessee, and Chicago playing at San Francisco, with Cincinnati visiting Dallas on Monday.
