NFL roundup: Chiefs edge out Broncos to remain unbeaten after tense field goal finale

The Kansas City Chiefs maintained their perfect record in the NFL season by thwarting a last-minute field goal attempt, securing a thrilling 16-14 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

The defending Super Bowl champions seemed on the verge of experiencing their first loss of the season as rookie Broncos quarterback Bo Nix skillfully orchestrated a late fourth-quarter drive that brought the team to the Kansas City 17-yard line.

This set up Wil Lutz for what appeared to be a routine 35-yard field goal to clinch the game with the final kick of an exhilarating contest at Arrowhead Stadium.

However, Lutz and the Broncos were left in disbelief when Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna managed to deflect the kick, blocking the attempt and allowing Kansas City to breathe a sigh of relief.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes celebrated with his teammates as Kansas City secured a victory that improved their record to 9-0 for the season.

"This reflects the character of our entire team," Mahomes remarked regarding Kansas City's narrow escape.

"I felt that our offense fell short. Our defense elevated their performance in the second half, and our special teams contributed as well—we are a complete team. It was a remarkable moment.

"Everyone has faith; there are no doubts. We continue to push forward and found a way to win in the end."

The loss was particularly tough for Broncos quarterback Nix, who displayed remarkable poise throughout the game, helping Denver establish a 14-3 lead in the second quarter with touchdown passes to wide receivers Devaughn Vele and Courtland Sutton.

Meanwhile, Denver's defense put Mahomes and the Chiefs offense under significant pressure, recording four sacks against the Kansas City quarterback.

Nevertheless, Mahomes gradually led his team back into contention, connecting with Travis Kelce for a touchdown that narrowed the score to 14-10 at halftime, followed by two field goals from Harrison Butker in the second half that gave the Chiefs a narrow 16-14 advantage.

Nix seemed to have done enough to position Denver for a potential victory, only for the dramatic blocked field goal to thwart the Broncos' hopes of a memorable win.

Steelers Edge Out Commanders
In a dramatic encounter on Sunday, the Washington Commanders faced a heartbreaking 28-27 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a contest ultimately decided by mere inches.

With just two minutes and 22 seconds left on the clock, Pittsburgh seized a one-point advantage when quarterback Russell Wilson delivered an exquisite 32-yard touchdown pass to new acquisition Mike Williams.

In response, Washington's quarterback Jayden Daniels attempted to guide his team into field goal range for a potential victory. However, on a critical 4th-and-9 play, a pass intended for Zach Ertz was deemed just short of the necessary yardage, resulting in a turnover to Pittsburgh.

The Steelers maintained possession, aided by a late penalty against Washington, allowing them to secure the victory and improve their record to 7-2.

In other early matchups on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills enhanced their record to 8-2 with a 30-20 triumph over the Indianapolis Colts.

The San Francisco 49ers also showcased resilience, narrowly defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 in Florida, with Jake Moody clinching the win by successfully converting a 44-yard field goal as time expired.

Rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall of San Francisco, who had missed the first six games of the season due to a gunshot wound sustained in August, marked his return by scoring the first touchdown of his NFL career.

The Carolina Panthers triumphed over the New York Giants 20-17 with an overtime field goal in the final international game of the season held in Munich, while the New England Patriots secured a 19-3 victory against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

Additionally, the New Orleans Saints narrowly defeated the Atlanta Falcons 20-17, just six days after parting ways with head coach Dennis Allen.

Eagles Dominate Cowboys in Late Game
The most highly anticipated matchup during the late kickoffs turned into a lopsided affair, as the Philadelphia Eagles decisively defeated their NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, with a score of 34-6 in Arlington.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts delivered an impressive performance, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for two more, leading the away team to a commanding victory and improving their record to 7-2. In contrast, the Cowboys have now suffered four consecutive losses, bringing their record to 3-6.

The game remained competitive at halftime, with the Eagles holding a narrow 14-6 lead. However, the dynamics shifted in the third quarter as they extended their advantage with two additional touchdowns. The Eagles maintained their momentum, adding two field goals in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

In other late games, the Arizona Cardinals achieved a significant 31-6 victory over the struggling New York Jets. Quarterback Kyler Murray excelled, completing 22 of 24 passes for 266 yards and contributing a passing touchdown. Notably, he finished the game with 17 consecutive completions, marking one of his finest performances in the NFL.

The Los Angeles Chargers also celebrated their sixth victory of the season, defeating the visiting Tennessee Titans 27-17 in another late matchup. Justin Herbert had a highly efficient outing, completing 14 of his 18 pass attempts. Remarkably, he has not thrown an interception through the first nine games of the season.
