NFL roundup: Chiefs secure top seed with dominant performance, Ravens crush Texans in blowout

Patrick Mahomes (29) threw three touchdown passes as the Kansas City Chiefs secured the top seed in the AFC with a commanding 29-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day, Wednesday.

As the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs will enjoy a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Conversely, the Steelers, now on a three-game losing streak, have lost control of their fate in the pursuit of the AFC North divisional title.

The Chiefs (15-1) appear to be peaking at an opportune moment, while the Steelers (10-6), who have also secured a playoff spot, find themselves trailing the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North standings.

Mahomes, who completed 29 of 38 passes for 320 yards, took command early in the game, connecting with Xavier Worthy for a seven-yard touchdown pass and later finding Justin Watson for an 11-yard touchdown, establishing a 13-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Steelers believed they had narrowed the gap when Jaylen Warren scored a touchdown, but the play was negated due to a holding penalty.

The situation worsened for Pittsburgh when quarterback Russell Wilson was intercepted by Justin Reid on the subsequent play.

However, the Steelers managed to generate some momentum in the second quarter, with Wilson capping off a 72-yard, 11-play drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown.

The teams traded field goals in the third quarter before the Chiefs pulled away in the final period.

A two-yard rush by Kareem Hunt extended the lead to 22-10, and Mahomes then connected with his reliable target, Travis Kelce, for a 12-yard touchdown pass to conclude the scoring.

Kelce recorded eight receptions for 84 yards, surpassing the 1,000 receptions milestone, becoming only the third tight end in history to achieve this feat, following Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten.

"I thought it was a complete team effort," Mahomes remarked.

"The defense stepped up, the offense contributed, and everyone left their mark on the game," he added.

"We are getting healthy at the right time; the big guy (Kelce) leads us, but we have talent across the board, which is encouraging," he concluded.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin candidly evaluated his team's recent defeat, which follows losses to both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Baltimore Ravens.

"To put it plainly, that was disappointing," Tomlin remarked. "This is not the style of football we aspire to play, and it bears an unsettling resemblance to our previous performance, as we are failing to execute fundamental aspects effectively."

"The reality is that our performance was subpar. It is unacceptable. We must take responsibility for this, while also identifying the changes we need to implement," he continued.

Ravens Dominate Texans
The Ravens showed no signs of faltering as the regular season approaches its conclusion, with reigning NFL Most Valuable Player Lamar Jackson delivering a stellar performance in a decisive 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans.

Jackson completed two touchdown passes and amassed 168 passing yards, while also showcasing his running ability with a touchdown, reinforcing his candidacy for a third MVP title.

Additionally, Jackson rushed for 87 yards on four attempts, surpassing Michael Vick to become the NFL's all-time leading quarterback in rushing yards.

Vick had accumulated 6,109 yards throughout his career, but Jackson achieved this milestone in 41 fewer games than the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback.

The Texans, who have already secured the AFC South title, appeared outmatched from the beginning when Derrick Henry scored the opening touchdown.

Henry conceded a safety, providing the Texans with a glimmer of hope at 10-2, but Jackson quickly responded by improvising out of the pocket to connect with Isaiah Likely for a touchdown, extending the lead to 15 points.

Jackson then demonstrated his exceptional skills as a running quarterback, exploiting a gap and sprinting 48 yards to effectively seal the victory for his team.

A one-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to Mark Andrews concluded the decisive victory for the Ravens, marking their third win in a span of 11 days.

The Ravens' last game of the regular season will take place against the Cincinnati Bengals, and a win in this match will clinch the AFC North title for them.
