The Detroit Lions narrowly escaped a late surge from the Chicago Bears, aided by a stroke of good fortune, to secure their tenth consecutive victory with a score of 23-20 on Thursday.
The initial matchup of three Thanksgiving Day games was intensely contested, ultimately coming down to the final moments. The Bears faltered during their last possession, enabling the Lions to achieve an 11-1 record for the first time in the franchise's history.
Detroit had established a commanding 16-0 lead by halftime, thanks to three field goals and a three-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Sam LaPorta.
However, the Bears mounted a vigorous comeback in the second half, scoring three touchdowns, two of which were the result of connections between quarterback Caleb Williams and receiver Keenan Allen.
When Williams connected with D.J. Moore for an impressive 31-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, the Lions' lead was trimmed to just three points.
Chicago then forced Detroit to punt on their subsequent possession, giving Williams the opportunity to either tie the game or secure a victory.
Unfortunately, a series of penalties hindered the Bears' final drive. Despite Williams being sacked with 36 seconds remaining, a field goal opportunity was still within reach.
Instead of calling a timeout, the Bears' offense attempted to gain additional yardage for kicker Cairo Santos, which cost them valuable time.
The ball was snapped with only six seconds left, and Williams' pass fell incomplete as the clock expired.
The Bears, now on a six-game losing streak, appeared bewildered and frustrated.
"Suddenly, I saw everyone rushing onto the field, and the game was over. I was left thinking, 'What just happened?'" remarked Bears tight end Cole Kmet.
"I believe the intention was to gain some yards and then call a timeout to set up for the field goal. However, we were just a bit too late, and that ultimately became the final play," he added.
The Lions expressed visible relief after narrowly avoiding what would have been an unexpected defeat.
