NFL roundup: Rams defeat 49ers in low scoring affair to boost playoff hopes

The Los Angeles Rams emerged victorious in a defensive battle against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, securing a 12-6 win that bolstered their NFL playoff aspirations. The Rams capitalized on three of their four field goals in the final quarter.

Rookie kicker Joshua Karty was the standout performer at a rain-soaked Levi's Stadium, where inclement weather hampered both teams' offensive efforts in the first half.

Karty's 23-yard field goal, which concluded a lengthy 17-play drive, equalized the score at 6-6 with 13:38 remaining in the fourth quarter. He followed this with a 27-yard field goal on the Rams' subsequent possession, giving them a 9-6 advantage.

The 49ers found themselves in field goal range on their next drive, but Brock Purdy's deep pass intended for the end zone was intercepted by Darious Williams.

The Rams then managed to consume the clock effectively, culminating in Karty's fourth field goal with just 18 seconds left in the game.

"This team can win in various ways," remarked Rams coach Sean McVay, whose squad had recently triumphed over Buffalo in a high-scoring 44-42 contest.

"I believed the defense made significant contributions consistently," McVay added, also commending quarterback Matthew Stafford for his composure under challenging conditions.

Stafford completed 16 of 27 passes for 160 yards, leading the Rams to an 8-6 record, placing them a half-game behind NFC West leaders Seattle.

In contrast, Brock Purdy completed 14 passes for 142 yards, with neither team managing to score a touchdown.

San Francisco initially took the lead with a 53-yard field goal from Jake Moody early in the first quarter and extended their advantage to 6-3 with a 47-yard field goal by Moody in the third quarter.

The game concluded with a sack of Purdy, further diminishing the 49ers' already limited playoff hopes, following their defeat in last season's Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Niners wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who had expressed dissatisfaction on social media regarding his lack of targets, recorded three receptions but notably dropped a crucial third-down pass in the third quarter.
