NHL roundup: Alex Nedeljkovic returns as Penguins blank Golden Knights

Fresh off a spell on the sidelines due to a hand injury, goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic returned with a stunning performance, deflecting all 38 shots fired his way on Sunday, steering the Pittsburgh Penguins to a triumphant 3-0 victory against the visiting Vegas Golden Knights.

This marked Nedeljkovic's inaugural shutout of the season and the eighth of his career. Notably, it was his first shutout against the formidable Vegas squad. The Penguins' scoring efforts were spearheaded by Ryan Graves, Noel Acciari, and Evgeni Malkin. This win proved pivotal as it halted their two-game losing streak, a relief considering it was their third game in four nights and fourth in six nights.

The shutout sealed an exceptional weekend for Nedeljkovic, who had just been removed from the long-term injured reserve earlier that day, following a hand injury. The 27-year-old, in his debut season with Pittsburgh, was initially considered the backup to Tristan Jarry. However, Nedeljkovic hadn't played in the NHL since October 24th. His return saw action on Friday for the AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on a conditioning assignment, where he not only secured a win but even managed to score a goal himself.

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights faced a setback, having lost five of their past seven games (with a record of 2-4-1) after an impressive 11-0-1 start to the season, fresh from their Stanley Cup victory. Their offensive prowess seemed to have dwindled, only managing 17 goals in their last seven games. Goaltender Adin Hill put up a solid effort, stopping 30 of 32 shots.

In other matchups, the Philadelphia Flyers dominated the Columbus Blue Jackets, clinching a 5-2 win as Ryan Poehling, Joel Farabee, and Cam York showcased their skills, sending the Blue Jackets to their ninth consecutive defeat. The Flyers extended their winning streak to five games behind goals from Bobby Brink and Travis Konecny, supported by Samuel Ersson's 20 saves.

Toronto's clash against Minnesota in the NHL Global Series ended with an exhilarating 4-3 overtime victory for the Maple Leafs. William Nylander emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in overtime and extending his record-setting, season-opening point streak to 17 games. Morgan Rielly and Auston Matthews also made significant contributions for Toronto, despite nearly squandering a two-goal lead.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres emerged victorious with a 3-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks, led by Rasmus Dahlin's goal and two assists. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen's 24 saves proved instrumental in ending Buffalo's three-game losing streak. On the other side, Philipp Kurashev and Taylor Raddysh found the net for the Blackhawks, who suffered their fourth consecutive loss despite Petr Mrazek's 17 saves.

Lastly, the St. Louis Blues secured a 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks, propelled by Joel Hofer's stellar 30-save performance. Jake Neighbours, Pavel Buchnevich, and Alexey Toropchenko contributed to the Blues' win, bouncing back from previous losses on their four-game road trip. Mason McTavish scored the lone goal for the Ducks, who endured their third straight defeat despite John Gibson's 28 saves.
