NHL roundup: Alex Ovechkin sets NHL record in Caps' victory over Red Wings

On Tuesday night, the visiting Washington Capitals triumphed over the Detroit Red Wings with a score of 2-1, while Alex Ovechkin achieved a remarkable feat in the NHL. Ovechkin's exceptional performance allowed him to set a new record by scoring 30 goals for the 18th consecutive season.

Dylan Strome scored the Capitals' first goal, reaching the 300-point milestone. Ovechkin surpassed Mike Gartner's record of 17 seasons with 30 or more goals.

Charlie Lindgren made 42 saves, falling just short of his sixth shutout as the Capitals ended a six-game winless streak (0-4-2). Their previous win was against the Red Wings on March 26.

Patrick Kane scored Detroit's lone goal. Alex Lyon stopped 21 shots, but the Red Wings suffered a significant setback in their wild-card race.
Mike Reilly, Bo Horvat, and Kyle Palmieri scored in the opening period as the Islanders secured third place in the Metropolitan Division with a victory over the Rangers.

Anders Lee added an empty-net goal with 5.8 seconds remaining for the Islanders, who won their fifth consecutive game despite being outshot 23-12 in the final two periods and 13-4 in the third. Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves for the Islanders, who are two points ahead of the Capitals and three points ahead of the Red Wings and Penguins.

Chris Kreider and Adam Fox found the net in the second period for the Rangers, who had their three-game winning streak halted. Igor Shesterkin made 25 saves.

The Florida Panthers defeated the Ottawa Senators with a score of 2-0, thanks to a stellar performance by backup goalie Anthony Stolarz. Stolarz not only secured his 15th win of the season but also contributed with his fourth career assist.

He made 25 saves throughout the game and now holds a record of 15-7-2, including two shutouts. The Panthers' victory was further solidified by goals from Anton Lundell and Nick Cousins. With this win, Florida surpassed their 2015-16 team's points record, now holding the second-most points in franchise history with 104.

On the other hand, the Senators struggled to find success against the Panthers, finishing the season series with an 0-3-1 record, including three shutout losses. Joonas Korpisalo, the goalie for Ottawa, made 28 saves but couldn't prevent the defeat.

In another game, the Calgary Flames staged a remarkable comeback against the San Jose Sharks, winning 3-2 in overtime. Andrei Kuzmenko played a crucial role in the victory, scoring the game-winning goal and finishing the game with two points.

Nazem Kadri also contributed with one goal and one assist, while Rasmus Andersson added another goal for the Flames. Dustin Wolf, a local from Gilroy, California, made 20 saves to secure the win for Calgary.

Kuzmenko continued his impressive performance with a six-game point streak, accumulating five goals and six assists during this period.

Despite their efforts, the Sharks couldn't secure a victory and have only managed two wins in their last 15 games. They currently sit at the bottom of the league standings.

Mackenzie Blackwood put on a strong performance in goal for San Jose, making 38 saves, but it wasn't enough to maintain their lead. William Eklund and Jacob MacDonald scored for the Sharks, but it wasn't sufficient to secure the win.
