NHL roundup: Capitals extend point streak to 10 games, Maple Leafs score seven straight goals

In an extensive 15-game schedule for the NHL on Saturday, the league witnessed a series of remarkable events, highlighted by the Washington Capitals extending their point streak to 10 games and the Toronto Maple Leafs achieving a stunning comeback with seven consecutive goals to defeat the Montreal Canadiens.

The Washington Capitals (31-10-5) continue to assert their dominance as the top team in the Eastern Conference, bolstered by an impressive performance from goaltender Logan Thompson, who has conceded only one goal in his last three outings.

The Capitals secured a 4-1 victory over their rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins (19-21-8), with contributions from Jakob Chychrun (13), Aliaksei Protas (19), Pierre-Luc Dubois (8), and Brandon Duhaime (6). This match also marked a significant milestone for Capitals forward Tom Wilson, as it was his 800th career game.

In the matchup between the Maple Leafs and Canadiens, the Montreal Canadiens initially surged to a three-goal advantage in the first period. However, the Toronto Maple Leafs responded emphatically, scoring seven unanswered goals from seven different players during the second and third periods, leaving the Canadiens' home crowd in disbelief.

The goals for Toronto came from Bobby McMann (13), Nicholas Robertson (8), William Nylander (27), Oliver Ekman-Larsson (3), Auston Matthews (18), Steven Lorentz (5), and David Kampf (3). Following a three-game losing streak, the Maple Leafs have now secured victories in their last two games, boasting a +5 point differential.

In a pair of thrilling shootouts, the Ottawa Senators triumphed over the Boston Bruins 6-5 after a series of penalty shots. The high-scoring affair began with two quick goals from Ottawa, only for Boston to respond with two of their own in the first period. Boston then took a 3-2 lead in the second period, but the Senators equalized with a power play goal from Josh Norris (16).

Boston regained the lead with two consecutive goals, making it 5-3, but Nick Jensen (3) and Josh Norris (17) rallied the Senators to tie the game at five, forcing overtime. Tim Stützle netted the decisive goal in the shootout, securing Ottawa's fourth victory in their last five games.

In a notably low-scoring contest, the New York Rangers secured a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, with Vincent Trocheck netting the only goal during the shootout. Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin was instrumental in the win, successfully stopping 27 shots on goal and thwarting all attempts from the Blue Jackets in the shootout.

In other league action, the Philadelphia Flyers triumphed over the New Jersey Devils with a score of 3-1, while the Nashville Predators extended their winning streak to four games following a decisive 6-2 victory against the Minnesota Wild. The Colorado Avalanche also enjoyed success, defeating the Dallas Stars 6-3.

The Anaheim Ducks faced their third shutout in five games, losing 3-0 to the Florida Panthers. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Lightning achieved their third win in four games, overpowering the Detroit Red Wings 5-1.

In the Western Conference, the Calgary Flames halted the Winnipeg Jets' three-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory, and the New York Islanders bested the San Jose Sharks 4-1.

Additionally, the Chicago Blackhawks caused an upset against the Vegas Golden Knights, winning 5-3, aided by two power-play goals from Tyler Bertuzzi. The Utah Hockey Clubs also emerged victorious, defeating the St. Louis Blues 4-2.
