NHL roundup: Capitals surge back to take 2-0 series lead

On Wednesday, the fifth night of the NHL playoffs featured the Washington Capitals and Los Angeles Kings in action. Here's a recap of the games.

In the matchup between the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens, the Capitals, the top seed in the Eastern Conference, took a 2-0 series lead with a 3-1 win. The first period ended without any goals, but the Canadiens took the lead shortly after the intermission when Christian Dvorak capitalized on an opportunity.

However, the Capitals quickly responded, regaining the lead just three and a half minutes later. Connor Carmichael tied the game within two and a half minutes, and a minute later, Dylan Strome scored what would be the decisive goal.

The Canadiens fired 47 shots throughout the game, just two fewer than the Capitals, with nearly half of those attempts coming in the final period as they fought to avoid a second consecutive loss. Ultimately, Carmichael sealed the victory for Washington with an empty-net goal.

The series will now shift to Montreal for the next two games on Friday and Sunday, where the Canadiens must secure at least one win to extend the series, while the Capitals aim to finish it off on the road for extra rest.

In another game, the Dallas Stars edged the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 in overtime, marking their second consecutive overtime victory in the series. Tyler Seguin scored for Dallas, giving them a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference first round.

The Avalanche, eager to recover from a tough loss in the previous game, started strong with Valeri Nichushkin scoring in the 10th minute after a one-on-one with goaltender Jake Oettinger. The Stars equalized in the third period during a power play when Jamie Benn capitalized on a rebound to score from close range.

Both goaltenders performed admirably, collectively making 53 saves, but it was Seguin who ultimately triumphed, scoring five-and-a-half minutes into overtime to give his team the edge in the best-of-seven series.

The Los Angeles Kings defeated the Edmonton Oilers 6-2, continuing their strong performance in the series and extending their lead to 2-0, with Adrian Kempe scoring two goals in the victory.

The Kings opened the scoring in the first period during a power play, with Brandt Clarke finding the net from close range after receiving a well-placed pass from Warren Fogele, who recorded two assists on the night.

They quickly added another goal early in the second period through Quinton Byfield, followed by Andrei Kuzmenko, who made it 3-0 shortly thereafter.

Edmonton managed to score at the end of the second period, narrowing the gap to 3-1, but the Kings pulled away in the final period.

Kempe scored twice, along with a goal from Anze Kopitar, solidifying their control in the series.
