NHL roundup: Colorado Avalanche rally for OT win over Vancouver Canucks

Valeri Nichushkin netted a power-play goal just half a minute into overtime, propelling the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks after overcoming a three-goal deficit in the second period. The win also allowed them to secure a tie for first place in the Central Division on Wednesday night.

Colorado secured their 21st comeback win of the season, propelling them into a tie for first place in the Central Division alongside the Dallas Stars. This victory marked their fifth consecutive win, showcasing their impressive form.

The overtime period began with Colorado enjoying a power play advantage, courtesy of a delay-of-game penalty committed by Vancouver defenseman Carson Soucy. Soucy had fired the puck over the glass and into the crowd with just nine seconds remaining in regulation.

Seizing the opportunity, Nathan MacKinnon unleashed a powerful one-timer from the top of the left circle. The shot deflected off Canucks defenseman Noah Juulsen, then struck Nichushkin's visor before ultimately finding the back of the net, securing the game-winning goal.

MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen both contributed a goal and an assist, while Ross Colton also found the back of the net for Colorado. Alexandar Georgiev showcased his skills between the pipes, making 18 saves to preserve the victory.

In another game, the Oilers dominated the visiting Capitals with a resounding 7-2 victory. Zach Hyman stole the show with a natural hat trick, while Leon Draisaitl recorded an impressive four points.

The Oilers have been in exceptional form at home, boasting a record of 20-4-1 in their past 25 games. Connor McDavid also made his presence felt, contributing a goal and two assists. Stuart Skinner stood tall in goal, making 23 saves to secure his 30th win of the season.

On the other hand, the Capitals struggled to find their footing, suffering their second consecutive loss at the start of their five-game Western road trip.

Ivan Miroshnichenko and Connor McMichael managed to find the back of the net for the Capitals, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Oilers' dominant performance. Darcy Kuemper made 30 saves in a valiant effort, but it wasn't sufficient to turn the tide in favor of the Capitals.

The Predators defeated the Jets with a score of 4-2, with Gustav Nyquist contributing a goal and an assist to extend Nashville's point streak to 13 games.

Kiefer Sherwood, Filip Forsberg, and Jason Zucker also found the back of the net for the Predators. Roman Josi had two assists, while Juuse Saros, Cole Smith, Colton Sissons, and Ryan McDonagh also recorded helpers. Saros made 27 saves in the victory.

On the other hand, Alex Iafallo and Mason Appleton scored for the Jets, with Brenden Dillon, Vladislav Namestnikov, Dylan Samberg, and Colin Miller providing assists. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 34 shots in the losing effort.

In a separate game, the Blues defeated the Kings 3-1, with Jordan Binnington making 40 saves for St. Louis. Alexey Toropchenko,

Jake Neighbours, and Brandon Saad scored for the Blues, who are making a late push for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Adrian Kempe scored for the Kings, while Cam Talbot made 27 saves in the losing cause.
