NHL roundup: Devils and Blue Jackets dominate with five-goal performances

The New Jersey Devils and Columbus Blue Jackets achieved significant victories on Wednesday during a relatively uneventful evening in the National Hockey League (NHL).

New Jersey Devils 5-1 Boston Bruins
The New Jersey Devils enjoyed a successful outing at home, defeating the Boston Bruins 5-1. The Bruins initially took the lead when Morgan Geekie scored 5:50 into the game, maintaining their advantage through the first intermission.

However, the dynamics shifted rapidly in the second period. Dawson Mercer equalized just 84 seconds into the frame, followed by Dougie Hamilton scoring on a power play to put the Devils ahead.

In a flurry of activity late in the period, New Jersey scored two goals within 12 seconds—first from Stefan Noesen and then Mercer again—extending their lead to 4-1.

As the third period commenced, the Bruins opted for a goaltender change. Despite managing only 10 shots in the final period, they were unable to close the gap or score again.

Nico Hischier sealed the victory for the Devils with a fifth goal at 6:28 remaining in the game. This win, which ended a four-game losing streak, keeps New Jersey in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, Boston remains tied for the final playoff position alongside the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens.

Toronto Maple Leafs 1-5 Columbus Blue Jackets
The Columbus Blue Jackets marked a return to form with a decisive 5-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Adam Fantilli opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal 4:20 before the end of the first period.

James van Riemsdyk, a former Maple Leaf, increased the Blue Jackets' lead midway through the second period, followed by Fantilli scoring again less than two minutes later.

Despite outshooting Columbus 48-29, the Maple Leafs struggled to find the back of the net. Their situation worsened six minutes into the third period when Luca Del Bel Belluz capitalized on another opportunity, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Maple Leafs managed to score with 10:38 remaining in the game, as Auston Matthews found the net, providing a brief moment of optimism. However, this optimism was short-lived, as Fantilli secured his hat-trick just minutes later with an empty-net goal. Despite Toronto outshooting Columbus in every period, they struggled to convert their opportunities and ultimately succumbed to defeat.

Following this loss, the Maple Leafs hold the second position in the Eastern Conference, with their defeat interrupting a three-game winning streak. They will have a brief respite before facing the Senators on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Columbus has ascended to seventh place, re-entering playoff contention. They will not have the luxury of rest, as they prepare to take on the Hurricanes in Carolina on Thursday night.
