NHL roundup: Leafs extend winning streak, Blackhawks suffer fourth consecutive loss

The Toronto Maple Leafs secured a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators, marking their third consecutive win, while the Boston Bruins compounded the woes of the Chicago Blackhawks on a relatively uneventful Wednesday evening.

The Leafs (16-7-2) faced a challenging match at home against the Predators (7-13-6), with Jonathan Marchessault giving Nashville an early lead just over five minutes into the game. This scoreline persisted until the third period, when Toronto rediscovered their offensive prowess.

Auston Matthews scored two goals within the first two and a half minutes of the third period, propelling the home team ahead. William Nylander then netted what would be the decisive goal at the 14:54 mark during a power play.

Mitchell Marner provided assists on all three goals for the Leafs, bringing his season total to 27 assists, placing him just three behind the league leader, Nathan MacKinnon. Mark Jankowski managed to score his first goal of the season, adding intrigue to the final 4:32 of the game, but that was as close as Nashville would come.

The Predators experienced their fifth consecutive defeat, with the previous three losses occurring in either overtime or a shootout. Conversely, Toronto celebrated their third straight win and their seventh victory in the last eight games.

In Illinois, the visiting Boston Bruins improved their record to 14-11-3 with a 4-2 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks (8-16-2). The Blackhawks initially took the lead within the first 90 seconds, courtesy of Alex Vlasic's first goal of the season. However, the Bruins equalized at the 7:43 mark of the first period through Morgan Geekie.

Brad Marchand dominated the second period, scoring two goals within a span of 3:05, shifting the momentum in favor of Boston. Despite Jason Dickinson bringing the Blackhawks back into contention with a goal late in the period, Geekie secured the win for the Bruins with his second goal just five minutes into the third period.

The challenges persist for Chicago, as they have suffered defeats in their last four matches, allowing 17 goals during this stretch. They remain at the bottom of the NHL standings, holding the fewest points earned (18). Meanwhile, the Bruins' victory has enabled them to secure third place in the Atlantic Division, marking their third consecutive win.
