NHL roundup: Leafs outlast Bruins in overtime to force Game 6

Matthew Knies found the back of the net 2:26 into overtime, securing a 2-1 victory for the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Following a drive by John Tavares towards the net, Knies capitalized on a loose puck that rebounded off Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman's pads, sealing the win as he charged down the slot.

Jake McCabe also contributed a goal, while Joseph Woll made 27 saves in his first start of the series for Toronto. The Maple Leafs will now prepare to host Game 6 on Thursday.

On the other side, Trent Frederic scored the lone goal for Boston, with Swayman making 31 saves but suffering his first defeat against Toronto in seven matchups during the 2023-24 season, including both regular season and postseason games.

In a nail-biting Game 5 clash, the Nashville Predators rallied against the Vancouver Canucks, ultimately triumphing 2-1 thanks to Alexandre Carrier's clutch third-period goal.

Carrier's first-ever playoff goal came at a critical juncture, breaking the tie with just over seven minutes left on the clock.

Despite the win, the Predators still face a 3-2 series deficit, setting the stage for a must-win Game 6 on their home ice in Nashville come Friday.

Over in Winnipeg, the Colorado Avalanche showcased their offensive prowess, dispatching the Jets 6-3 to advance to the Western Conference semifinals.

Mikko Rantanen stole the show with two goals and an assist, while Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen also found the back of the net, etching their names in NHL history as the first teammates to score in each of their team's first five postseason games.

With goaltender Alexandar Georgiev standing tall between the pipes, the Avalanche now await the winner of the Dallas Stars versus Vegas Golden Knights series.

Meanwhile, in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Carolina Hurricanes sealed their fate in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a resounding 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders in Game 5.

Jack Drury and Stefan Noesen ignited a third-period surge, netting goals just eight seconds apart to break the deadlock and secure the series-clinching win.

With a convincing 4-1 series triumph, the Hurricanes now gear up for a showdown against the Presidents' Trophy-winning New York Rangers in what promises to be a thrilling conference semifinal matchup.

It was an evening rife with drama, heroics, and the kind of heart-stopping action that makes playoff hockey unforgettable.
