NHL roundup: Ovechkin scores for fourth game in a row, Panthers defeat Blues

The National Hockey League (NHL) featured several games on Thursday evening. Here is a recap of a couple of the matches that occurred.

Philadelphia Flyers 3-4 Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals maintained their winning streak by securing a 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers on the road.

Matvey Michkov initiated the scoring with a goal two and a half minutes before the end of the first period. However, the Capitals' lead was short-lived, as their captain, Alexander Ovechkin, equalized with less than a minute remaining in the opening frame.

Just over four minutes into the second period, Connor McMichael put the Capitals ahead, but the Flyers responded quickly, with Tyson Foerster tying the game on a power play three minutes later. Michkov then netted his second goal of the night midway through the period, restoring Washington's lead.

Once again trailing, the Capitals managed to equalize with 13:37 left in regulation, courtesy of Lars Eller. Despite being outshot 38-26 during the game, the Capitals found a way to prevail. Jakob Chychrun scored what would become the decisive goal with under eight minutes remaining. The Flyers, despite their efforts, were unable to respond, resulting in their defeat.

With this victory, the Capitals extended their lead to 10 points at the top of the Eastern Conference standings, marking their 36th win of the season. The Flyers, having lost five consecutive games and seven of their last eight, remain near the bottom of the conference.

St. Louis Blues 2-3 Florida Panthers

In Missouri, the St. Louis Blues faced off against the Florida Panthers in a closely contested match, with a late goal securing a 3-2 victory for the visitors.

The game began positively for the Blues, as Zachary Bolduc scored just three and a half minutes into the match. However, the Panthers quickly equalized through Matthew Samoskevich a few minutes later. The Panthers then took the lead when Matthew Tkachuk scored on a power play towards the end of the first period.

Five minutes following the initial intermission, the Blues equalized as Oskar Sundqvist scored during a power play opportunity. Subsequently, neither team was able to establish dominance, as they exchanged attempts to regain the lead.

The decisive moment arrived in the final 20 seconds, when Tkachuk netted his second goal in the closing moments, securing the victory for Florida. This marked his 21st goal of the season, which proved to be crucial.

With this win, the Panthers maintain their position in second place in the Eastern Conference, despite being significantly behind Washington. Meanwhile, the Blues find themselves in 11th place in the Western Conference, though they still have the opportunity to make a playoff push.
