NHL roundup: Panthers edge Penguins in shootout, Blackhawks and Blues score four in home victories

The National Hockey League (NHL) featured several matches on Friday night, highlighted by a penalty shootout victory for the Florida Panthers. Here is a recap of some of the key moments from the games.
Florida Panthers 3-2 Pittsburgh Penguins (SO)
The Florida Panthers faced a challenging contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins, having taken the lead on two occasions only to see their advantage equalized each time. Ultimately, the Panthers triumphed in the shootout.
After a scoreless first period, the Panthers struck first just 36 seconds into the second period, with Gustav Forsling netting his sixth goal of the season.
The Penguins responded midway through the second period, as Sidney Crosby scored five seconds into a power play to level the score. The game remained tied until 8:48 of the third period, when Matthew Tkachuk restored Florida's lead during a power play. However, Pittsburgh equalized once more, with Rickard Rakell finding the net with just 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
Overtime did not yield a winner, despite the Panthers outshooting their opponents in the five-minute extra session. The game proceeded to a shootout, where the Panthers converted on their second and third attempts. The Penguins' two shooters were unable to score against Aaron Ekblad, sealing the victory for the Panthers.
With this win, the Panthers now share 50 points with the Toronto Maple Leafs, placing them fourth in the Eastern Conference, while the Penguins remain in contention for the final playoff spot.
Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 Montreal Canadiens
In Chicago, the Blackhawks secured a 4-2 victory over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.
The home team quickly established an early lead, with Tyler Bertuzzi scoring just 3:21 into the game. It was not until the end of the first period that Montreal managed to equalize, with Cole Caufield capitalizing on his opportunity.
Nick Foligno gave the Blackhawks the lead at 7:05 into the second period, marking the first of his two goals in the match. This goal was the sole score of the middle period, before Patrick Maroon extended his team's lead early in the final frame. Emil Heineman narrowed the gap to one with 10:15 remaining, providing Montreal with a glimmer of hope.
However, that hope was extinguished with less than five minutes left, as Foligno netted his second goal, securing two points for Chicago. Despite outshooting their opponents 58-44, the Canadiens were unable to overcome the Blackhawks on this occasion.
Chicago remains at the bottom of the Western Conference, despite achieving their 13th win of the season, with 11 of those victories coming in regulation. The defeat ended Montreal's three-game winning streak, leaving them three points shy of a playoff position in the Eastern Conference.
In another matchup, the St. Louis Blues achieved a commanding 4-0 victory over the Ottawa Senators, securing a shutout at home.
Brayden Schenn opened the scoring at 7:26 of the first period, followed by Brandon Saad, who added a second goal with 4:10 remaining in the opening frame, placing the Blues in a strong position.
Despite generating 12 shots in the second period, Ottawa was unable to find the back of the net against a resolute Jordan Binnington in goal for St. Louis. Saad scored again with 6:45 left in the second, bringing the score to 3-0. The 32-year-old completed his hat-trick with less than two minutes remaining in the final period, capping off a remarkable performance for the Blues.
With this victory, St. Louis moves into sole possession of 10th place in the Western Conference, just two points behind the Vancouver Canucks. This win marks their fourth in the last five games. Conversely, the Senators have now lost four of their last five, remaining in the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
