NHL roundup: Penguins score nine in blowout, Islanders win thriller

Numerous games took place in the National Hockey League (NHL) on Thursday night. Here is a recap of some of the matches that occurred this evening.
Montreal Canadiens 2-9 Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Pittsburgh Penguins (13-14-4) dominated the Montreal Canadiens (11-15-3) at the Bell Centre, securing a decisive 9-2 victory. The Canadiens initially took the lead with a goal from Nick Suzuki, but the Penguins quickly equalized through Rickard Rakell just two minutes later. The first period concluded with no further scoring, but the Penguins were far from finished.
In the second period, Bryan Rust scored twice, extending Pittsburgh's lead to two goals. However, the Canadiens managed to reduce the deficit by the end of the period, thanks to a goal from Joel Armia. The third period marked a significant shift in momentum, particularly for Montreal.
Rakell netted his second goal just 4:40 into the final period, followed by goals from Kris Letang and Anthony Beauvillier within a minute of each other. Rust completed his hat-trick with 8:04 remaining, and both Matt Nieto and Noel Acciari added goals in the closing moments, culminating in a comprehensive defeat for the Canadiens.
The Penguins now find themselves two points shy of a playoff position, while the Canadiens remain at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, having allowed 109 goals this season. Only the San Jose Sharks (114) have conceded more.
Minnesota Wild 1-7 Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers (17-10-2) unleashed a scoring spree after the first period, ultimately defeating the Minnesota Wild (19-6-4) with a score of 7-1. Zach Hyman opened the scoring seven minutes into the game, followed by Kasperi Kapanen, who doubled the Oilers' lead. Frederick Gaudreau managed to score for the Wild by the end of the first period, but it was not enough to shift the game's momentum.
Less than two minutes into the second period, Connor Brown reinstated the two-goal advantage, even with Edmonton playing shorthanded. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl further contributed to the Wild's struggles by scoring within a three-minute span. By the conclusion of the second period, the Oilers had established a 5-1 lead and appeared unfazed.
In the third period, Troy Stetcher and Derek Ryan completed the scoring, as the visitors showcased goals from seven different players in their victory. They are currently enjoying a four-game winning streak and are demonstrating strong performance in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, Minnesota has suffered two losses in their last three games, allowing the Winnipeg Jets to surpass them into the top position in the conference.
In a thrilling encounter in New York, the Islanders narrowly defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4. The only goal of the first period was scored by the visitors during a power play, courtesy of Connor Bedard.
What followed was a period and a half of dominance by the home team, who netted five goals within the subsequent thirty minutes. Dennis Cholowski and Simon Holmstrom turned the game around, with Holmstrom ultimately giving New York the lead. In the third period, goals from Noah Dobson, Bo Horvat, and Maxim Tsyplakov—scored within a two-minute window—extended the Islanders' lead to 5-1.
However, the Blackhawks refused to surrender easily, as T.J. Brodie found the net with 8:56 remaining. Tyler Bertuzzi added two more goals later, but that was as close as Chicago would get. They ultimately fell 5-4, nearly managing to rally from a four-goal deficit to force overtime.
This marks the Islanders' third victory in their last four matches, while the Blackhawks have now experienced six losses in their last seven games.
