NHL roundup: Red Wings dominate at home, Ducks edge Hurricanes in overtime

The National Hockey League (NHL) wrapped up the week on Sunday with five games, featuring all ten teams scoring at least once. Below is a summary of the matches that occurred.

Detroit Red Wings 6-2 Seattle Kraken
The Detroit Red Wings maintained their winning momentum with a decisive 6-2 victory over the Seattle Kraken. The home team established an early lead, with Marco Kasper scoring just three minutes and 22 seconds into the game. J.T. Comphrey quickly followed, extending the lead to two goals within 71 seconds, and Alex DeBrincat added a third shortly thereafter.

Facing a 3-0 deficit within the first six minutes, the Kraken opted for a goaltender change, replacing Philipp Grubauer. However, this move proved ineffective, as Patrick Kane scored the fourth goal for the Red Wings less than two minutes later. The rapid four-goal surge in the opening nine minutes placed the home team in a dominant position.

In the second period, the Red Wings added two more goals, both on power plays. Erik Gustafsson scored at 4:17, followed by Dylan Larkin, who netted the sixth goal with 4:39 remaining in the period. At this point, the outcome of the game was virtually decided.

Although Oliver Bjorkstrand scored for Seattle two minutes before the intermission and Matthew Beniers added another in the third period, the Kraken could not recover from the Red Wings' explosive start.

With this victory, the Red Wings have now won six consecutive games and have climbed to 10th place in the Eastern Conference, just two points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final playoff position. Conversely, the Kraken have struggled, losing five of their last six games and find themselves nine points away from a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Carolina Hurricanes 2-3 Anaheim Ducks (OT)
The Anaheim Ducks ended a three-game losing streak on Sunday by defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime, with Cutter Gauthier scoring the decisive goal.

The Ducks, currently positioned 12th in the Western Conference, established an early advantage with a goal from Jansen Harkins before the 10-minute mark. Following this, scoring opportunities became scarce during the first and second periods, as the Hurricanes faced difficulties due to ineffective finishing and some lapses in discipline.

As the game progressed, the situation appeared to worsen for the Hurricanes when Gauthier scored his first goal of the evening just one minute and 18 seconds into the final period.

However, the Ducks' second goal seemed to invigorate the Hurricanes, who quickly responded with a goal from Andrei Svechnikov. In a thrilling conclusion, they managed to force the game into overtime with a dramatic equalizer from Canadian Seth Jarvis just seconds before the end of regulation.

Ultimately, it was Gauthier who secured victory for the Ducks, netting the decisive goal nearly two minutes into the overtime period.
