NHL Roundup: Red Wings Dominate Sabres with Seven-Goal Blitz, Canucks Edge Flames in Shootout

The NHL delivered a night of high-scoring action on Wednesday, as the Detroit Red Wings snapped their losing streak in emphatic fashion, while the Vancouver Canucks edged out the Calgary Flames in a tense shootout battle.
Red Wings Crush Sabres 7-3 to Revive Playoff Hopes
The Detroit Red Wings reignited their postseason push with a commanding 7-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres, ending a six-game skid and keeping their playoff hopes alive.
Buffalo opened the scoring seven minutes into the game, with Tage Thompson finding the net for the visitors. However, the Red Wings quickly responded, equalizing through Marco Kasper before Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane extended the lead to 3-1.
Josh Norris pulled one back for the Sabres, but Detroit reasserted control as Vladimir Tarasenko struck midway through the second period. Buffalo’s Zach Benson capitalized on a power play to narrow the gap to 4-3 before the intermission.
Detroit then took over in the final period, with Kane netting his second of the night just 96 seconds in. Kasper added another goal, and Moritz Seider sealed the win, securing a much-needed two points for the Red Wings. Despite the win, they remain two points behind the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, while the Sabres remain at the bottom of the standings.
Canucks Outlast Flames in Shootout Thriller
The Vancouver Canucks secured a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames, prevailing in a shootout after a back-and-forth contest.
Pius Suter gave Vancouver the lead late in the first period, but Nazem Kadri quickly responded for Calgary, leveling the game before the intermission.
The Canucks reclaimed the advantage early in the second period through Jake DeBrusk’s power-play goal, but Jonathan Huberdeau answered back with a short-handed strike before adding another power-play goal to put the Flames ahead.
Elias Pettersson equalized late in regulation, forcing overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, the shootout saw Pettersson and Huberdeau both convert their attempts before Conor Garland netted the decisive goal to hand Vancouver the win.
Both teams now sit tied at 71 points in the Western Conference playoff race. Despite the loss, the Flames currently occupy the final postseason spot, while the Canucks remain just outside the cutoff.
NHL Playoff Race Intensifies
As the regular season inches closer to its climax, both Detroit and Vancouver will need to maintain momentum to secure a playoff berth. With every point crucial in the standings, expect more high-stakes battles in the weeks ahead.
