NHL roundup: Red Wings return to winning ways, Maple Leafs win in OT

The National Hockey League (NHL) featured numerous games on Thursday night, showcasing many of the league's premier teams. Here is a recap of a few notable matchups.

Florida Panthers 2-5 Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings, currently among the most formidable teams in the NHL, swiftly returned to form by defeating the Florida Panthers 5-2. It took nearly nine minutes for the scoring to commence, with Jonatan Berggren converting on a power play to give the Red Wings an early advantage. Anton Lundell equalized for the Panthers shortly thereafter, resulting in a tie at the end of the first period.

Despite registering only 27 shots throughout the game, Detroit regained the lead with another power play goal, this time from Dylan Larkin. However, the Panthers quickly responded, with Evan Rodrigues leveling the score once more just 40 seconds later.

The Red Wings surged ahead decisively, as Patrick Kane and Marco Kasper found the net within a two-minute span later in the period, establishing a 4-2 lead. Larkin sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 1:22 remaining in regulation, marking the team's 21st win of the season.

The Red Wings still have work to do, as they sit three points shy of a playoff position. Meanwhile, the Panthers remain in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, having lost three of their last four games.

Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 New Jersey Devils (OT)
The Toronto Maple Leafs demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming a three-goal deficit to defeat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in overtime. Jack Hughes initiated the scoring for the Devils just 2:21 into the first period, marking the only goal of the opening frame and setting the stage for a challenging game for the Maple Leafs.

In the second period, it took six minutes for the Leafs to score, with William Nylander finding the net. However, Nico Hischier quickly countered just two minutes later, maintaining the Devils' lead.

In the third period, Toronto equalized again when Auston Matthews scored during a power play. Similar to the earlier period, New Jersey responded two minutes later, with Hischier netting his second goal of the game.

Despite the Devils' efforts to maintain their advantage, Matthews struck again, scoring his second goal with 4:13 remaining in regulation. The Leafs dominated in shots, outshooting their opponents 55-35, which significantly impacted the game.

Overtime was necessary, and it took only 70 seconds into the extra period for Nylander to secure his second goal of the evening, clinching a crucial victory for the Leafs.

This outcome propelled Toronto ahead of New Jersey into second place in the Eastern Conference, with both teams now tied at 58 points. The win also marked the end of a three-game losing streak for the Leafs, while the Devils suffered their third defeat in four games.
