NHL roundup: Sabres edge Capitals in shootout, Canadiens triumph in OT against Canucks

The NHL's four-game schedule on Monday delivered an exhilarating evening, highlighted by the Sabres securing a victory over the Capitals in a shootout, while the Canadiens triumphed over the Canucks in front of their home fans.
Tom Wilson (18) was instrumental for the Capitals, netting two goals to level the score at 2-2 before the Sabres responded with a power play goal from Tage Thompson (19), taking a 3-2 lead.
The Capitals equalized in the third period with a goal from Aliaksei Protas (18), making it 3-3. After neither team scored in overtime, the Sabres clinched their 15th win of the season with shootout goals from Alex Tuch (13) and JJ Peterka (11), both of whom had previously scored for the Sabres, concluding the match at 4-3.
In the matchup between the Canadiens and the Canucks, the Canadiens emerged victorious with a score of 5-4. Five players contributed to the scoring for Montreal, culminating in Nick Suzuki's (12) game-winning power-play goal just 38 seconds into overtime. Cole Caufield (22), Kaiden Guhle (3), Kirby Dach (6), and Lane Hutson (3) also found the net during regulation.
The Canucks initially led 3-1, but the Canadiens rallied with three consecutive goals to take a 4-3 advantage. A late goal from Jake DeBrusk (17) forced the game into overtime, where Montreal quickly sealed the win. J.T. Miller (8) had a standout performance for the Canucks with two goals, while Jonathan Lekkerimaki (2) added another.
In the contest between the Avalanche and the Panthers, the Panthers struck first with a goal from Carter Verhaeghe (10), but the Avalanche dominated thereafter. Devon Toews (5) scored two consecutive goals for Colorado, and Mikko Rantanen (24) secured the victory with an empty-net goal.
The Avalanche (25-15-1) have now achieved an impressive record of 8-1-1 in their last ten games, while the Panthers (24-15-2) maintain their position just behind the Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division standings.
