Nick Kyrgios to make return from injury at Brisbane International

Nick Kyrgios, aged 29, is set to make his competitive tennis comeback at the Brisbane International, leading up to the Australian Open. He expressed his enthusiasm on Friday, stating that the event is "going to be sick."

The Australian, who was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2022, has participated in only one ATP Tour singles match over the past two years due to injuries affecting his knee, foot, and wrist.

The Brisbane tournament will commence the 2025 season on December 29, just ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year scheduled for mid-January.

In a statement, Kyrgios remarked, "I am feeling fit and healthy, and I am excited for my return to tennis following some time out of the sport. It has been a long journey of recovery to be where I am today. One of the goals I had set was to be able to play during the Aussie summer, so I am excited that I get to start in Brisbane, which is one of my favourite tournaments."

Speaking to Australia's Channel Nine, he added, "To get back out there in front of the home fans is going to be sick."

Previously, Kyrgios had indicated his intention to make a tentative return at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi in December.

During his time away from competitive play, the Australian has taken on a role as a commentator. He achieved a significant milestone by reaching his first major singles final at Wimbledon, where he was defeated in four sets by Novak Djokovic. Throughout his career, he has faced challenges in an era dominated by Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer, along with his occasionally volatile temperament.

Kyrgios attained a career-high ranking of 13 in the world in 2016.
