Nico Hischier takes center stage as the Devils defeat the Capitals 2-0

Dawson Mercer and Michael McLeod both found the back of the net twice for the Devils, who have emerged victorious in four out of their last five games. Nico Daws, the goaltender for New Jersey, made an impressive 23 saves to secure the win.
On the other side, Evgeny Kuznetsov contributed with a goal and an assist, while Alex Ovechkin provided two assists for the Capitals.
Hunter Shepard, Washington's goaltender, made 22 saves. Unfortunately for the Capitals, they have now lost five out of their last six games.
In the first period, Hischier gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 3:03 by capitalizing on a rebound in the low slot after Shepard stopped a shot from Colin Miller.
Hischier extended New Jersey's lead to 2-0 at 9:50 on the power play, redirecting a point shot from Luke Hughes into the net.
However, Connor McMichael managed to cut the deficit for Washington in half at 18:38 on the power play, beating Daws high on the short side after receiving a pass from Rasmus Sandin.
In the second period, Mercer, playing in his 200th NHL game, scored from the slot off a pass from Erik Haula, giving the Devils a 3-1 advantage at 8:08.
Kuznetsov brought the Capitals within one at 11:25, sliding the puck under Daws' right pad after receiving a pass from Ovechkin at the blue line.
With just two seconds remaining in the period, John Carlson scored on the power play with a one-timer from the point, assisted by Kuznetsov, to tie the game 3-3.
In the final seconds of the middle frame, McLeod managed to beat Shepard with a backhand shot, giving the Devils a 4-3 lead.
Mercer continued his impressive performance in the third period, scoring from the inner edge of the left circle to make it 5-3 for the Devils at 7:16. McLeod then added another goal, slipping a backhand shot past Shepard from in front of the net, extending the lead to 6-3 at 15:35.
