Nico Williams strikes to secure a hard-fought victory for Athletic Club over Slavia Prague

Athletic Club triumphed over SK Slavia Prague with a narrow 1-0 victory in the UEFA Europa League (UEL), marking their inaugural win in five encounters against Czech teams.

The Červenobílí displayed remarkable courage in the opening minutes, with Simion Michez's deflected shot compelling Julen Agirrezabala to execute an impressive save within the first seven minutes. A subsequent corner created further danger, but Mojmír Chytil's header was comfortably handled by the home goalkeeper.

El Hadji Malick Diouf then narrowly missed the target with a header, while Dani Vivian suffered a cut above his eye as Athletic began to find some respite from the relentless pressure they were under.

Upon the resumption of play, the Lehoiak established a stronger presence but still failed to test Antonín Kinský in the Slavia goal. Michez once again challenged Agirrezabala, this time with a header.

The hosts believed they had earned a penalty when Jan Bořil fouled Iñaki Williams just before the half-hour mark; however, the decision was reversed after Gorka Guruzeta collided with Oscar Dorley prior to the incident.

Despite this, Nico Williams consistently posed a threat when in possession, and his shot took a deflection off David Zima, completely deceiving Kinský for the opening goal.

Before halftime, Lukáš Provod and Michez continued to test Agirrezabala, reminding everyone that Slavia remained competitive. This was further emphasized after the break when a powerful strike from Michez forced another remarkable save from the Spanish goalkeeper.

Christos Zafeiris then delivered a precise pass to Ondřej Zmrzlý, who could only manage to hit the side netting while stretching for the ball. Substitute Tomáš Chorý also struggled to find the net, missing two attempts before having a header saved.

The outstanding performance of the home goalkeeper ensured that, despite Iñaki's pass being intercepted after Kinský had advanced from his goal, Athletic secured all three points and maintained their unbeaten streak in the UEL campaign, having lost only one of their last nine matches across all competitions.

In achieving this, they handed Slavia only their second defeat in 18 competitive fixtures this season, the other loss occurring against LOSC Lille during UEFA Champions League qualifying.
