Nigeria 1-1 Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe dent Nigeria's World Cup hopes with last-minute equaliser

Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes suffered a major setback after the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday.

Despite Victor Osimhen's 74th-minute opener, a 90th-minute goal from Tawanda Chirewa shattered Nigeria’s dreams, leaving them fourth in Group C with just seven points from six matches.

Osimhen Scores, But Zimbabwe Strikes Late

After a crucial 2-0 win over Rwanda last Friday, Nigeria entered the match desperate to keep their qualification hopes alive. The Super Eagles dominated possession and created several chances but struggled to break down Zimbabwe’s resilient defense. Finally, in the 74th minute, Osimhen headed home a Moses Simon cross, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead.

However, Zimbabwe nearly equalised moments later, with the Super Eagles saved by the crossbar. Nigeria pushed for a second goal, but Wilfred Ndidi missed a golden opportunity, failing to convert a one-on-one chance. The missed chances proved costly as Zimbabwe struck in the 90th minute—Tawanda Chirewa beat Stanley Nwabali at his near post, securing a dramatic 1-1 draw.

South Africa Defeats Benin to Strengthen World Cup Bid

Meanwhile, South Africa extended their lead at the top of Group C with a comfortable 2-0 win over Benin. With 13 points from six matches, Bafana Bafana now sit five points ahead of second-placed Rwanda, who drew against Lesotho.

Nigeria’s Qualification Hopes in Jeopardy

With only the group winners securing automatic World Cup qualification, Nigeria now faces an uphill battle to qualify via the playoffs. The four best runners-up from the nine African groups will enter a playoff, with the winner advancing to an intercontinental playoff for a final World Cup spot.

What’s Next?

Nigeria will need a strong finish in their remaining fixtures, while South Africa is now in pole position to qualify directly.
