Nigeria appoints Eric Chelle as Super Eagles head coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Mali head coach Eric Chelle to take charge of the Super Eagles, the country’s men’s national football team. Chelle replaces Augustine Eguavoen, who led Nigeria to a successful qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Chelle, a former Mali international, previously coached the Eagles of Mali for over two years before being dismissed in June 2023. During his tenure, he guided Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON, where they were edged out by eventual champions Ivory Coast in extra time.

In their announcement, the NFF stated that Chelle's primary objective is to secure a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Challenging Path Ahead

The Super Eagles face a daunting task, having made a sluggish start in World Cup qualifying. Nigeria currently sits four points behind Group C leaders Rwanda after managing just three draws from their opening four matches.

Chelle's first assignments will come in March, when the Super Eagles travel to Kigali to face group leaders Rwanda before hosting Zimbabwe. With only group winners guaranteed qualification for the World Cup, the pressure is on for immediate results.

Mixed Reactions to Chelle's Appointment

Chelle’s appointment marks a historic first, as he becomes the first non-Nigerian African to manage the Super Eagles. However, the decision has sparked debate among fans and analysts, many of whom had expected a high-profile international coach to lead a team brimming with talent, including reigning African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman and his predecessor, Victor Osimhen.

Last year, negotiations with notable names like Herve Renard, two-time AFCON winner, and former Sweden boss Janne Andersson fell through. A potential deal with Bruno Labbadia also collapsed, leaving the NFF to explore alternative options.

While some fans argue for continuity under Nigerian coaches like Eguavoen, others point to the mixed performances under Finidi George as justification for bringing in a fresh perspective. Chelle’s track record, which includes guiding Mali to a landmark victory over Nigeria in a friendly last year, likely influenced the NFF's decision.

For Eric Chelle, the road ahead is as much about winning over a passionate and expectant Nigerian fanbase as it is about delivering results on the pitch. The upcoming World Cup qualifiers provide the first real test of his ability to lead the Super Eagles back to global football’s grandest stage.
