Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro leaves only weeks after reaching AFCON final

Jose Peseiro, the 63-year-old Portuguese coach of Nigeria, announced on Friday that he had resigned from his position just a few weeks after leading the team to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, the announcement was made by him, confirming the termination of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In his statement, he expressed his pride and honor in coaching the Super Eagles, as well as the immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm that characterized the past 22 months. He also mentioned a sense of fulfillment.

Under Peseiro's guidance, Nigeria reached the final of the Cup of Nations for the first time since 2013. However, despite initially leading 1-0 against Ivory Coast, they ultimately lost 2-1 in Abidjan on February 11th.

Apart from his time with Nigeria, the well-traveled coach has also managed Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
