Nigeria Faces Tough Challenge in AFCON 2025 Group Stage

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been drawn into Group C for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they will face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in the group stage.

The draw, held at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, Morocco, was conducted by CAF’s Director of Competitions, Samson Adamu, with assistance from African football legends including Joseph Yobo (Nigeria), Serge Aurier (Côte d’Ivoire), Hadji Mustapha (Morocco), and Aliou Cisse (Senegal).

Super Eagles’ Road to a Fourth Title

Nigeria, three-time African champions and runners-up in the last tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire, will begin their quest for a fourth AFCON title on December 23rd against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium. They will then face Tunisia on December 27th and wrap up their group stage campaign against Uganda on December 30th.

The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, the 2019 AFCON semi-finalists, pose the biggest challenge in the group, while Uganda and Tanzania, despite being considered underdogs, have the potential to cause upsets.

Group A: Hosts Morocco Face Mali Test

Hosts Morocco, a strong title contender, have been placed in Group A, where they will battle Mali, Zambia, and Comoros. Mali’s coach Tim Saintfiet expressed confidence in his team, stating that “facing strong opponents is more motivating.”

Egypt-South Africa Rivalry Renewed in Group B

Seven-time AFCON winners Egypt are in Group B alongside South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe. The rivalry between Egypt and South Africa will be one of the standout clashes of the group stage.

Defending Champions Ivory Coast Face Tough Group

Reigning champions Ivory Coast will compete in Group F against Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.

  • Group B: Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe
  • Group C: Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, Tanzania
  • Group D: Senegal, DR Congo, Benin, Botswana
  • Group E: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan
  • Group F: Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon, Mozambique

With 24 teams competing in six groups, the top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stage.

The tournament will kick off on December 21st, with Morocco facing Comoros in the opening match at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
