Nigeria's D’Tigress Upset Australia, Win First Olympic Game in 20 Years

This win marks their first Olympic game victory in 20 years.
In what is considered one of the biggest upsets of the Olympics so far, the Nigerian team ended the first half with an 11-0 run, securing a 13-point advantage. Amy Okonkwo's crucial triple solidified their lead, ensuring coach Rena Wakama’s team held off the Australian Opals.
Ezinne Kalu was a standout player for Nigeria, contributing 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in her return to the team since the Tokyo 2020 Games. Australia's Opals turned the ball over 26 times, allowing Nigeria to score 26 points from those turnovers.
This victory is Nigeria’s second in the Women’s Olympic Basketball tournament, their first being a win against South Korea in 2004. It also marks their maiden win in nine preliminary round games.
Australia's defeat is their second consecutive loss in the opening game of a Women's Olympic Basketball event, following a streak of six opening game victories.
With this triumph, Nigeria becomes the first African country to defeat Australia in 12 games at the World Cup and Olympics.
