Nottingham Forest 1-1 Liverpool: Super sub Jota rescues point for Reds away at Forest

A strategic move by Arne Slot enabled Liverpool to equalize, resulting in a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, thus preventing the Tricky Trees from achieving their first league double over the Reds since the 1962/63 season.

Nottingham Forest initially faced significant pressure but managed to counterattack effectively in the eighth minute, igniting the enthusiasm of their home supporters. Anthony Elanga skillfully threaded the ball to Chris Wood, who finished with precision past Alisson Becker using his weaker foot.

Shortly thereafter, Murillo came agonizingly close to scoring a spectacular second goal, while Callum Hudson-Odoi’s deflected shot was comfortably saved by Alisson.

Liverpool regained control of possession for the most part but found it challenging to penetrate a Forest side that displayed both resilience and organization. Luis Diaz attempted a long-range shot that went off target, and Neco Williams executed a commendable defensive play to thwart Dominik Szoboszlai’s header.

Around the half-hour mark, there was a moment when it appeared the hosts might be vulnerable to a counterattack; however, Murillo effectively neutralized Diaz, preventing the Colombian from delivering a pass to Cody Gakpo, much to the frustration of Slot and his team.

After the interval, Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad continued to be a tough opponent, with Murillo successfully blocking Szoboszlai’s effort.

A testament to the hosts' defensive strength was that it took 59 minutes for Mohamed Salah to register his first shot, which was pulled wide.

At the other end, Elanga’s dangerous free-kick was deflected away by Alisson, but Slot’s tactical substitutions in the 66th minute yielded immediate results. Kostas Tsimikas delivered a corner that Diogo Jota headed in, marking Liverpool’s first shot on target of the match.

Matz Sels made two crucial saves to prevent Jota from adding to the scoreline, while Elliot Anderson blocked a subsequent attempt from Salah.

Sels then adeptly positioned himself to deflect Szoboszlai’s shot wide and sprang into action to tip Salah’s attempt over the bar, before Ola Aina blocked the Egyptian’s follow-up on the goal line.

Sels’ remarkable performances, which included another stunning save to deny Gakpo, ensured that Forest extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches, placing them second in the Premier League table for the time being, while remaining six points adrift of Liverpool, despite the end of their seven-match winning streak.

Although the Reds continue to hold an unbeaten record in the league since their encounter with Forest at Anfield in September and currently lead the standings, there may be some apprehension regarding their solitary victory in the last four matches across all competitions.
