Nottingham Forest 2-1 Manchester United: Gibbs-White's late winner downs Red Devils; adds to Ten Hag's woes

This marked the 100th league encounter between the two teams, both of whom entered the match with a boost in morale following victories over Newcastle United and Aston Villa. Erik ten Hag's team has faced difficulties on their travels this season, while the home team took control early on with opportunities for Nicolas Dominguez and Chris Wood. On the other hand, Aaron Wan-Bissaka displayed alertness by blocking Danilo's shot from outside the box.

In contrast, Ten Hag's men posed little threat against a team that had conceded the most league goals in 2023.

After the halftime break, it was Nuno Espírito Santo's side that came out stronger Moussa Niakhate embarked on an impressive run down the right flank but failed to find his intended recipient in the penalty area. The visitors showed their first moment of urgency shortly after, as Diogo Dalot struck the post after being found in space by Wan-Bissaka.

However, Ten Hag's side experienced another disappointing moment during the match when Dominguez scored a clinical close-range finish from Montiel's cut-back, marking a low point in their already dismal season.

Matt Turner almost jeopardized their lead with a poorly executed clearance, but Niakhate's efforts kept Rashford at bay.

Unfortunately for Turner, his luck ran out moments later when Garnacho intercepted his sloppy clearance, allowing Rashford to calmly score into the bottom corner.

Despite Forest's impressive counter-attack and Gibbs-White's stunning finish from outside the box, Fernandes had a chance to equalize in stoppage time. However, Turner made a smart save to secure a memorable victory.

Although it was a sobering evening for Ten Hag's men, this win continues to build on the positive momentum under new manager Nuno at the City Ground.

With these three points, Forest avoided the embarrassment of suffering a fifth consecutive home defeat in the league for the first time since 1999. They now sit five points clear of the relegation zone in the East Midlands.

As for United, this was their 14th defeat in all competitions the last time they lost more than 13 times before the new year was in the 1930/31 campaign.
