Nottingham Forest 3-2 Southampton: Forest hold off late Saints charge to continue impressive season

Nottingham Forest’s impressive Premier League run continued with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Southampton at home on Sunday. The win moves Forest level on points with second-placed Arsenal, sitting on 44 points, just six behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Meanwhile, Southampton’s struggles persist as they remain rooted to the bottom with just six points.
Forest showcased their patience and precision in the first half, converting all three of their shots on target into goals. Southampton struggled to cope with the home side’s intensity, although a late fightback almost threatened Forest’s comfortable lead.
The breakthrough came in the 10th minute when Morgan Gibbs-White flicked the ball to Elliot Anderson. Anderson drove forward unchallenged and fired a low shot inside the near post from just outside the area, marking his first goal of the season.
"I've been working hard for that, and the lads have been telling me to shoot," Anderson told BBC. "When I got space, I thought I’d just bang it."
Seventeen minutes later, Southampton defender Jan Bednarek’s heavy touch near his box allowed Chris Wood to pounce. The ball fell to Callum Hudson-Odoi, who unleashed a stunning strike from outside the area, leaving goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with no chance.
Four minutes before halftime, Wood turned provider, sending a pass wide to Ola Aina. Aina delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, which Wood met with a powerful header to make it 3-0.
"I hope a first half like today never happens again. They score the first two goals, that is ridiculous," lamented Southampton boss Ivan Juric.
Despite Forest’s commanding lead, Southampton fought back in the second half. Lesley Ugochukwu’s shot took a wicked deflection off teammate Bednarek, looping over Forest keeper Matz Sels and into the net on the hour mark.
Southampton pushed forward relentlessly, with Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu forcing Sels into crucial saves. When 12 minutes of added time were awarded, the visitors sensed an opportunity.
Onuachu capitalized on a corner, powering a header into the net to bring Southampton within one goal. The visitors nearly equalized in stoppage time, but Aina came to Forest’s rescue, clearing a Bednarek header off the line to preserve the win.
"We started really bright but made it hard for ourselves in the second half," said Anderson. "Ultimately, we got the three points, and I’m really happy."
Forest’s unbeaten run now extends to eight league games, with only a 1-1 draw against Liverpool midweek blemishing their recent form. Southampton, however, remain in dire straits under manager Ivan Juric, who has now lost all five league matches since his appointment in December.
Forest remains firmly in the title race as they continue their climb up the Premier League standings. Southampton, on the other hand, must find answers quickly to avoid a dismal season conclusion.
