Nottingham Forest sack Steve Cooper after run of five defeats in six games

Nottingham Forest fired manager Steve Cooper on Tuesday, just days after suffering their fifth defeat in six Premier League games, a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

With three wins this season, Forest are 17th in the table with 14 points from 17 games, five points above the relegation zone.

They have only one point from their last six games, which included a 5-0 loss to Fulham, where Forest fans sang Cooper's name in support.

According to British media reports, former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo is in the running to succeed Cooper.

Cooper is the second Premier League manager to be fired this season, following the sacking of newly promoted Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom earlier this month.

Cooper signed a two-year deal with Forest in September 2021, when they were bottom of the Championship. He led them to promotion the following May, winning the playoffs after finishing fourth the previous season.

In October 2022, his contract was extended until 2025.

Forest, who broke the Premier League transfer record in the close-season 2022 window, had a rocky start to their first top-flight season since 1999.

They avoided relegation after losing four consecutive games in April 2023, thanks to victories over Arsenal and Southampton in May, and finished 16th, four points above the bottom three.

On Saturday, Forest will play Bournemouth in the Premier League.
