Nottingham Forest’s Champions League hopes dented after 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace

Nottingham Forest’s pursuit of a top-five Premier League finish and a potential UEFA Champions League berth took another hit on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The result leaves Forest with just one win in their last five league outings and two points adrift of the top five, as rivals Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Chelsea all recorded victories in their respective fixtures.

Forest Miss Opportunity in South London Clash

Coming into the match, Forest knew a win was essential to stay within striking distance of Champions League qualification. However, the Tricky Trees delivered a lackluster first-half performance, struggling to assert dominance early in the game. They nearly benefited from a Palace error when Tyrick Mitchell’s misjudged header almost allowed Dean Henderson to intervene, but the chance fizzled out.

Mitchell would soon redeem himself, delivering a pinpoint cross to the far post around the 30-minute mark. Daniel Muñoz connected with a well-timed volley, but Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels produced a superb save to keep the game scoreless.

Forest’s best opportunity of the half came through a classic counter-attack. Chris Wood set up Anthony Elanga, but the winger’s tame effort was easily saved by Henderson, leaving the scoreline unchanged at the break.

The second half sprang to life just minutes after the restart. Ismaïla Sarr was denied at close range by Sels in the 50th minute, and within 14 seconds, Chris Wood was on the verge of becoming the first Forest player to reach 10 away goals in a Premier League season, only to be blocked by Maxence Lacroix.

Shortly before the hour mark, VAR was called into action after a lively Mitchell was brought down by Sels inside the box. Eberechi Eze calmly slotted home the resulting penalty, extending his scoring streak to three consecutive matches and putting Palace 1-0 up.

Forest Respond but Miss Chance to Regain Momentum

Forest responded swiftly. Just four minutes later, a deflected effort from Neco Williams took a fortunate bounce off Murillo, wrong-footing Henderson and levelling the score at 1-1.

Late drama ensued as Eze struck the crossbar in the dying minutes, nearly grabbing a brace. Substitute Eddie Nketiah also found the back of the net in stoppage time, but his goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

What This Means for the Table

With the draw, Nottingham Forest remain outside the Premier League’s top five for Champions League qualification, despite having occupied third place earlier in the season. Their current dip in form threatens to derail what was once a promising campaign under manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace appear set for another bottom-half finish, likely placing 9th or lower for the ninth time in ten Premier League seasons.

  • Goals:
    • Crystal Palace: Eberechi Eze (60’ pen)
    • Nottingham Forest: Murillo (64’, OG)
