Novak Djokovic sets up blockbuster clash with Carlos Alcaraz, criticizes broadcaster Channel Nine

Novak Djokovic stormed into the Australian Open quarterfinals with a commanding 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Jiri Lehecka, setting up a highly anticipated showdown with Carlos Alcaraz. However, the 10-time champion shifted attention off the court, criticizing official broadcaster Channel Nine for mocking him and his fans.

Djokovic’s Dominance and Controversy

Staying on course for a record 25th Grand Slam title, Djokovic declined an on-court interview following his match, offering only a brief acknowledgment to the crowd. The Serb later addressed comments made by Channel Nine reporter Tony Jones, who had ridiculed him and his fans earlier in the tournament.

"Since they're official broadcasters, I chose not to give interviews for Channel Nine," Djokovic told reporters, adding that he had expressed his stance to tournament director Craig Tiley. "If you guys want to fine me for not giving an on-court interview, that's okay. I'll accept that because this is something that needs to be done."

Jones defended his comments, describing them as "good-natured banter" with Serbian fans.

Djokovic vs. Alcaraz: A Match to Watch

Looking ahead to his clash with Alcaraz, Djokovic praised the Spaniard: "He's a very dynamic, explosive player. Incredibly talented. Charismatic player. Great to watch, not great to play against. I think when the draw was out, a lot of people were looking forward to (it). So here we are."

Alcaraz advanced after Jack Draper retired due to injury while trailing 7-5, 6-1.

Sabalenka and Gauff Extend Winning Streaks

In women’s action, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka crushed teenager Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-2 to notch her 18th consecutive win at Melbourne Park. "I'm super happy to get this win," Sabalenka said. "Mirra is so young, so mature, such a great player." Sabalenka will face Russian veteran Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who defeated Donna Vekic 7-6(0), 6-0.

Coco Gauff also extended her winning streak in 2025 to nine matches by overcoming Belinda Bencic 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. The American 2023 U.S. Open champion showed resilience after dropping the opening set to Bencic, who has a strong record against major champions.

Gauff vs. Badosa: A Potential Thriller

Gauff is now set to face Spain’s Paula Badosa, who defeated Olga Danilovic 6-1, 7-6(2) to reach her first Australian Open quarterfinal. "I love Coco," Badosa said. "We always have tough matches. The last one was really tough ... I hope I can have my revenge."

Other Notable Performances

Alexander Zverev maintained his form with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Ugo Humbert, while Tommy Paul cruised past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

With Djokovic, Alcaraz, Sabalenka, and Gauff delivering standout performances, the Australian Open quarterfinals promise high-stakes clashes and thrilling tennis action. Stay tuned for more updates from Melbourne Park!
