Novak Djokovic thrilled to return to Indian Wells after five year hiatus

Novak Djokovic now 36 year old, expressed his enthusiasm for returning to Indian Wells and participating in the BNP Paribas Open. This marks his first appearance at the tournament since 2019, as he was unable to attend due to COVID-19 travel restrictions imposed by the United States.

The upcoming Masters 1000 event is highly anticipated, especially by the world number one who is aiming for an unprecedented sixth title. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments outside of the Grand Slams, it attracts top players from around the globe.

In a video message from the charming Southern California desert city, Djokovic expressed his excitement about returning to the Tennis Paradise tournament after a five-year absence.

He acknowledged it as one of the best tournaments in the world, emphasizing its popularity among players, including himself.

Djokovic eagerly awaits the opportunity to showcase his skills once again in front of the passionate and dedicated tennis fans that make this event truly special.

Reflecting on his previous triumphs, Djokovic fondly recalled his first Indian Wells crown, which he won shortly after clinching his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2008.

The victory held great significance for him, and he vividly remembers the intense final against Mardy Fish.

Over the years, Djokovic has added four more Indian Wells titles to his impressive collection, often engaging in epic battles against tennis legends like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. These memorable matches have further fueled his anticipation for his return to the tournament.

Joining Djokovic at the BNP Paribas Open is three-time Indian Wells champion Nadal, who missed the recent Australian Open due to a muscle tear. The absence of last year's event due to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent travel restrictions prevented Djokovic from participating in the past three editions. However, with the tournament back on track this year, he is eager to make his comeback.

Before the tournament kicks off, Djokovic was spotted enjoying another sporting event in Los Angeles, watching Lionel Messi and his Major League Soccer team, Inter Miami, take on LA Galaxy. This brief diversion only adds to the excitement surrounding his return to competitive tennis.

As the defending champions, Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina will be looking to defend their titles at this year's BNP Paribas Open, which is scheduled to take place from March 3-17.
