Novak Djokovic wins first match on clay in Geneva ahead of French Open

Novak Djokovic marked a crucial return to form on clay, defeating Hungary’s Márton Fucsovics 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to the Geneva Open quarterfinals. The straight-sets victory is Djokovic’s first clay-court win of the 2025 season, boosting his confidence just days before the French Open begins.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who turned 38 on Thursday, showcased a dominant all-round performance, never facing a break point and commanding the match from start to finish.
“My first win this season on clay, obviously it’s great to break the ice,” Djokovic said post-match. “It’s a very demanding surface... but I felt very focused and pleased with my level of tennis.”
Djokovic rebounds after early exits in Monte Carlo & Madrid
This victory ends a tough clay stretch for Djokovic, who entered Geneva on a three-match losing streak, including early exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid. He also recently parted ways with Andy Murray, his former rival and short-term coach, signaling a reset in preparation for the Grand Slam season.

A Golden Slam and ATP Title No. 100 in Sight?
Djokovic is also chasing history. Already the only man to hold a Career Golden Slam – all four major titles and Olympic gold – Djokovic now eyes his 100th ATP title and a record-extending 25th Grand Slam at Roland Garros.
His form in Geneva could prove critical, especially with his next test being a quarterfinal clash against Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi – the player who knocked him out of the Madrid Masters last month.
Taylor Fritz also advances in Geneva
Meanwhile, American top seed Taylor Fritz progressed to the Geneva quarterfinals as well, defeating France’s Quentin Halys 6-4, 7-6(5). Fritz, a consistent hard-court performer, is looking to make an impact on clay before Paris.
