Novak Djokovic withdraws from 2025 Italian Open amid uncertain form

Novak Djokovic, the world No. 5 and all-time Grand Slam leader with 24 major titles, has pulled out of the 2025 Italian Open in Rome, organizers confirmed on Tuesday. The clay court Masters 1000 event, scheduled for May 7–18, will go on without the Serbian star, who has claimed the Rome title six times, most recently in 2022.

“Novak Djokovic has announced he won’t take part in #IBI25. See you next year, Nole,” the tournament’s social media post read, without citing any reason for his absence.

Djokovic Still Chasing First Title of 2025

Djokovic’s withdrawal continues a turbulent 2025 season for the 37-year-old, who is still without a trophy. His last title came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, held at Roland Garros, the venue of the upcoming French Open.

Earlier this year, he lost the Miami Open final to Czech teenager Jakub Mensik and suffered early-round exits in Monte Carlo (to Alejandro Tabilo) and Madrid (to Matteo Arnaldi).

Health Concerns and Eyes on Roland Garros

Prior to the clay season, Djokovic revealed he had been struggling with an eye infection, which may explain his recent dip in performance. With his focus likely shifting to the 2025 French Open, the Serbian ace may be opting for rest and recovery before making another run at Grand Slam history in Paris.
