OGC Nice 1-4 Rangers: Light Blues thrash Nice to keep their Europa League hopes alive

Rangers delivered an impressive performance in the South of France, securing a 4-1 victory against OGC Nice in the UEFA Europa League, marking the first home defeat of the season for Les Aiglons.

Both teams entered the match with comparable unbeaten records, but it was the home team that initially took control, as Badredine Bouanani struck a remarkable shot that narrowly missed the target with Jack Butland unable to respond.

The Rangers goalkeeper was called into action again within the first fifteen minutes, before John Souttar managed to clear the danger. From that point onward, the Scottish team asserted their dominance for the remainder of the first half.

This dominance culminated in a flurry of goals starting in the 35th minute, allowing Rangers to head into halftime with an impressive 3-0 advantage.

The opening goal came from Vaclav Cerny, who delivered a powerful shot just inside the penalty area. Less than three minutes later, the second goal followed due to poor defending from the Nice backline, which permitted Mohamed Diomande to break through and score.

The situation for Nice's defense deteriorated further in stoppage time when Marcin Bulka unnecessarily rushed off his line, allowing Hamza Igamane to evade him and slot the ball into an unguarded net.

Franck Haise made a tactical adjustment at halftime, bringing on Tanguy Ndombele, and once again, the French side began the second half with vigor, as Gaetan Laborde forced a fingertip save from Butland.

Hicham Boudaoui then unleashed a spectacular long-range shot, but the Rangers goalkeeper made a remarkable save to maintain his team's lead.

This crucial save proved significant, as Philippe Clement’s squad extended their lead to four goals in the 54th minute, capitalizing on another defensive blunder from Nice.

Pablo Rosario inexplicably passed the ball directly to Igamane, who advanced into the penalty area and found the far corner with a precise finish.

With a four-goal advantage and 30 minutes left on the clock, Clement seized the opportunity to rest key players, implementing four substitutions.

The multiple changes diminished the intensity of the match, as a stunned Nice team struggled to respond to Rangers after conceding the fourth goal.

The hosts managed to salvage a moment of pride late in the game when Bouanani executed a perfectly placed free-kick, but it served merely as a consolation.

This remarkable victory for Rangers extends their unbeaten streak in matches played in France to six (three wins and three draws) and solidifies their position in the play-off spots with three matches remaining, two of which are against Premier League teams, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

In a concerning development, Nice has fallen to second from the bottom, having recorded no wins and only two points from five Europa League matches, making qualification appear increasingly unlikely.
