Ohtani 'very unlikely' to pitch in Dodgers preseason games in Japan, confirms manager

The Los Angeles Dodgers anticipate that two-way talent Shohei Ohtani will be prepared to bat when the 2025 season commences with two games in Tokyo. However, manager Dave Roberts indicated on Monday that it is improbable he will pitch during those matches.
"Very unlikely," Roberts remarked at Major League Baseball's winter meetings in Dallas, as reported on MLB website . "I just don't envision us starting the clock in March and then expecting to maintain that through October."
He added, "That would necessitate a break or pause during the season, so I remain skeptical. I still think it is unlikely."
Following their World Series victory over the New York Yankees, the Dodgers are set to begin the 2025 season with two games against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo on March 18-19.
Ohtani was awarded the National League Most Valuable Player title after an extraordinary 2024 season, during which he became the first player to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single year.
The 30-year-old star concluded 2024 with his first World Series championship, securing his second consecutive MVP award and his third in four years, having previously won the American League MVP in 2021 and 2023 while with the Los Angeles Angels.
However, Ohtani sustained a torn labrum in his left shoulder while attempting to steal a base during the World Series and underwent surgery in November.
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes mentioned in Dallas that Ohtani has initiated an off-season throwing program.
Nevertheless, he has not pitched since 2023, when he underwent a second ligament repair surgery on his right elbow. Gomes emphasized that the Dodgers would not hasten his return to the mound.
"Early-season games are crucial, but we believe that if we can position him to peak toward the end of the season, that would be the ideal scenario," Gomes stated.
