Olympiacos defeat Fenerbahce to progress to Conference League semi-finals

Olympiacos successfully fended off a determined comeback from Fenerbahçe, securing their spot in the semi-finals of the UEFA Conference League. Despite conceding a 1-0 win to the Turkish team in the second leg, Olympiacos goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis displayed exceptional skill by saving three penalties, ultimately ensuring his team's progression.

The atmosphere at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium was electric as the match commenced, with the home fans making their hostility towards Olympiacos evident every time they had possession of the ball.

Nevertheless, Olympiacos maintained a narrow advantage from the first leg and had the first scoring opportunity of the game when Chiquinho attempted a long-range shot that sailed over the crossbar. However, the visitors were constantly under threat, and it didn't take long for Fenerbahçe to equalize on aggregate and take the lead in the match.

Sebastian Szymanski provided a pass to Irfan Kahveci, who skillfully found the back of the net. The 28-year-old nearly gave his team the overall advantage with a dazzling dribble and powerful shot, but Konstantinos Tzolakis made a brilliant save. Throughout the first half, Olympiacos had their moments, but Fenerbahçe's solid defense neutralized any potential threats.

While Fenerbahçe aimed to maintain their first clean sheet at home in eight games, they came close to doubling their lead when Edin Dzeko's looping effort narrowly missed the target. Olympiacos coach Jose Luis Mendilibar decided to introduce Georgios Masouras as an additional attacking option, and the winger almost made an immediate impact with a narrowly missed attempt.

As extra time loomed, Masouras had a golden opportunity to secure the victory for his team as he sprinted towards the goal, but his low shot was well saved by Fenerbahçe's goalkeeper, Dominic Livakovic. To the relief of the visiting side, Michy Batshuayi's goal was disallowed due to an offside call, keeping the tie level.

Neither side could finish the tie inside 90 minutes, so an extra 30 were required. Olympiacos went the closest when Vicente Iborra’s header hit the post via the knee of Livakovic, and the visitors finished the game with ten men when Andreas Ntoi received a second yellow card.

Ultimately, spot-kicks were required, and Olympiacos’ 21-year-old goalkeeper Tzolakis was the hero, saving efforts from Dusan Tadic, Cengiz Under and Leonardo Bonucci to send the travelling contingent into raptures. They will now face Aston Villa for a place in the final as they continue their search for a maiden UEFA trophy.
